Show THE CITIZEN 4 The giant catepillar tractors, graders, steam shovels and trucks move road material with such speed and ease that they make the efforts of the hordes of men required to build the Roman roads look be carefully checked, especially in the material departments where vast quantities of material has been purchased. Now that we are at this business let us make a complete job of the entire city and county building and let there be no whitewashing. Those who have been trusted with our taxes and allowed some of the money to stick to their fingers should be given a vacation on the hill. We must have a general cleanup in this city and we are glad that an election is coming on. Let us all purchase a new clean broom in order that we may sweep clean. The dollar, which is taxed but 50 cents in outside counties should also receive the same consideration in this county. If it is to be 100 per cent in taxes, let us make it unanimous all over the state. " . EMBEZZLERS W. H. Stenacker, chairman of the board of county commissioners, has filed charges of misappropriation of public funds against County Treasurer George T. Judd and William Groesbeck, formerly chief deputy county treasurer appointed by his brother Ed. Groesbeck, former county treasurer. While the audit shows a shortage of $16,582.35, the complaint on file designates the amount as $2553.71. These two boys have been trusted Republican workers for many years, but they have fallen by the wayside. The glittering gold proved too much of a temptation for them. They have sacrificed their standing and honor in the community, and if the charges against them are proved in court they will be placed behind prison bars. It has been very hard for the public to believe that these two boys had taken the money as charged but the facts appear indisputable and they will now have to take their medicine. The Republican party discovered the shortages and while it is hard to condemn your own, the party will throughly clean house and see that the taxpayers will not lose a cent. The bonding companies are held responsible for all shortages and the taxpayers will be fully reimbursed for all amounts illegaly taken out-othe treas- puny by comparison. Canada is following the lead of the United States in road building. A newspaper item published by the Province of Ontario Dti partment of Highways, says: Dont apologize for Ontarios roads. The day is past when they do not compare with those of any other province pr state. Road building to carry modern traffic, is a new science. It was in Ontario that the practice of putting on gravel or crushed stone in thin layers was first proven to be more economical as well as more safe to traffic. Feeding the road, it was called. Ontario developed the asphaltic mixed macadam which is a hot asphalt mixed with gravel or crushed stone. In ten minutes after being laid, it is hard enough for traffic. Detcurs are not necessary while this construction is being put down. In building the highways, every consideration has been give to the safety of those who use them. The 'greatest factor of safety now lies in automobile drivers themselves. See that your brakes, lights and steering gears are in good condition. Practice caution at spots where danger may arise. Watch warning signs for crossroads, railroads or other danger. Be careful in villages or where pedestrians are using the roads. Be courteous intraffic. . . POOR CHILDREN With more new hay in the country than ever, with our cows grazing in green pastures with little or no expense, and farmers getting very little for their milk, the milk trust in the city has boosted the price of milk to 12 cents, and no discounts for cash, no matter how many tickets you take. The rich man is not worrying about the price of milk; he would probably pay a dollar per quart if asked. But how about the poor? Milk is a necessity for children and the present price prohibits the poor working man from this essenury. tial food.
