What a thrill it must hate been to her as she saw that huge mass of living humans anxious to do her homage and bestow upon her head the crown of victory, When this girl returns home it Is up to tho- - ciyic organizations and the people of this city to see that she be tendered a royal welcome home and a big reception. There were about 200,000 students in the United States who entered the oratorical competition and what the Constitution of the United States ' meant to them. ' Miss Carlsons first test ana contest was at the East High school, which she won. She then entered the local counties and won again. Then she won the state finals and as Utah's representative entered the zone contest at Los Angeles, which she won the other day with high honors. The national contest will be held at Washington next Friday, May 27, where the winners of each of the seven zones will meet in the national championship and which will be her fifth contest Quite naturally, Mr. and Mrs. Carlson are very proud of their talented daughter and they can hardly realize the great honor that has befallen them. As they sizzled, singed and burned, And his eyes would rest on debtors Whichever way theyd turn. Said the angel, Come on, grocer, Theres the pearly gates to see. But the grocer only muttered, This is heaven enough for me. - tically used up? Utahs Proud Daughter The initial entrance of Utah in the international oratorical high school contest, resulted in unexpected victory, in which the attractive andi accomplished beautiful daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Carlson of 764 Hawthorne avenue, won the zone championship at Los Angeles recently, and which victory is barely known by the people of Utah, notwithstanding that the victory is among the greatest of literary honors that can be won by a high school student. Miss Carlson has left for Washington, where she will be one of seven who are entered for the national championship, and according to Los Angeles newspapers, she will be a likely winner there. If she wins ; at Washington she has one more step to gothe international contest She is eighteen years of age, an accomplished pianisit, dramatic editor . and feature writer at school-- She went tp Los Angeles alone to enter the contest in which she' was the victor. With confidence and a determination to win, yet without a single friend, you might say, at her side, and in a strange city, she was 'not in the The sum of $32,000,000 was moved ; least perturbed as several of the other entered the large auditorthrough Fifth avenue safely the other contestants will ium preceded with bands of music, day by 22 armed guards. Of course if the shoe were on the other foot and Uncle Sam owed every country in Europe, Europe would be unanimous for cancellation. The net gain in income tax collections for the first nine months of the fiscal year was $227,000,000. When Secretary Mellon said lower rates would increase the yield he evidently knew his arithmetic. It would be ah interesting innovation for the Republicans and Democrats to hold their national conventions at the same' time, thus allowing each gathering to hear by radio how the other is getting along.
