In checking over Canadian reports we find that pelts in 1922-.2- 3 brought an average of $112.80, quite a difference between that and the $1,000 the general public is made to believe. At any rate $150. would be a good average price and defective skins would bring much less. A great many fox farms have been established in this country the past few years and the Biological Survey estimates that there area bout 40,000 foxes in captivity for fur raising. The prices for the breeding foxes is held up on the strength of the $1,000 skin price, but those who invest their money find out that no such prices prevail. The stock price is all out of proportion to the actual worth. . A SCOTCH PROBLEM. laird used to get befuddled every Saturday night. Then with his servant, Saunders, in the same condition, he would mount his horse and set off for the castle. While fording the stream one night the laird fell into the water. He got to his feet and sputtered: Saunders, mon, something fell off. Did ye noo hear the splash? Thot I did, admitted Saunders, and he climbed into the water up to his waist. Of course, he soon found his master. Why, laird, its yourself, he said. No, no, Saunders, insisted the laird It cant be me, for here I stoutly. A Scottish ' . the Department of Justice, Mr. Stone is not a spectacular man. He moves quietly and cautiously but with un- flinching determination and compelling force. Without any previous boasting or advertising, Mr. Stone has brought suit against the Binder Twine trust, charging it with being a monopoly and a conspiracy in restraint of trade. It costs the farmers of this country a year for binder twine and nothing could be more reprehensible than a conspiracy to compel them to pay more for this commodity than is just and right. A long list of banks and trust companies are also made defendants in the suit. The Attorney General paid heed to the complaints of the farmers that they were being robbed by the binder twine trust, conducted a quiet investigation and discovered that the trust was making an annual profit of $1,800,000 on a capital of $1,500. Then he haled the members of the trust into court. Give Mr. Stone a little time and he will teach wealthy that they are as amenable to the law as anyone else. Another suit instituted by Attorney General Stone is designed to break up the fraudulent practice of importing high grade wools duty free by wrapping them with carpet wools which are on the free list. The tariff on woo! has provel less effective than was ex $3,-000,0- 00 law-breeake- rs 8 pected. Mr. Stone started an investigation to ascertain the cause. Again there was no blare of trumpets. It was all done very quietly. But now suit has been entered to forfeit to the United States an importation of wool valued at $1,500,000. There are a number of technicalities Involved but at least the suit will have the effect of deterring the smuggling of fine grade wools by packing them inside of. coarse, duty free grades.
