Show THE CITIZEN 5 HONEST POLITICS TAX LEVY 1 Some politicians try to fool the public, but such politicians are seldom successful. When you find a politician in your community jjjho has many friends, just put it down in black and white, that said party has played a fair game and has never besmirched the 'character of another or of his opponent. Yet even such honest men: have their enemies because of certain jealousies, he man who goes out and takes sides makes friends and he makes enemies. The man s, who sits tight on the fence makes no friends and he makes no but he gets nowhere. It must be remembered that we cannot please all and it must also be remembered that no party ever won an election because the platform was figured out to suit everybody. Several weeks ago we wrote an editorial showing the desirability of all factions getting together and working in harmony. Iff one can make votes through the abuse of those who may differ in opinion. The place to differ is not on the street, but in the convention, and when a candidate secures the nomination for the sought office, his endorsement should be unanimous. It is often said that an honest man will not enter politics. We would hate to believe that, but it does show how this political backbiting effects the average person on the outside of the ring. There are just as good people in office as there ever were out of .office. Of course there are some bad ones, but there are more bad .ones out of office than in, regardless of the fact that one person in every twelve in the United States today can boast of a political job. eiie-mie- Loyal Republicans are at a loss to understand why delegates to the Republican State convention would for a minute consider the nomination of a candidate who two years ago was doing his best to .defeat the Republican candidate for United States Senator. Traitors generally get their reward, but it does not take the form of making them standard bearers of a victorious party. Mabey, econocy and efficiency, is a good battle cry in appealing to the voters of Utah. . . WATER The best educational medium to be used in the case of water conservation in this city is the water meter. Check up the water used by the people who have meters and you will find that at their rate of consumption we have enough water for twice our present population. Had the progressive campaign to meter inaugurated by Charles F. there would not have been any shortage of Barrett been-continued- , water this year. If the people expected a reduction in city taxes "this year they are doomed to disappointment. Mayor Neslen and Commissioner T. T. Burton were out of town when this most important question came up, and they cannot be held responsible if your taxes are not reduced However, Herman H. Green, M, R. Stewart and A. B. Barnes, were game enough to Stick to the post aiid they are the goats. They could not reduce expenses in their own departments, but they could have some fun with the two commissioners who were on a vacation. A special auditor once made the statement that he could cut $1,000,000 from the city operating list. We. would like to see him give his reasons and how it can be done. We are willing to back him for mayor if he can produce such results. . The way to elect a Democratic Governor for Utah is to nominate the candidate of the HOW TO DO IT GANG on the Republican ticket. .. LABOR VOTE ticket in the Utah labor unions indorse the LaFollette-Wheelcoming presidential campaign. Heretofore the union men have been divided upon party lines some with the Rapublicans and some with the Democrats. However, all this is changed now. Labor secs more advantages in the platform of the new party If all unions in the United States back the new ticket there will be something doing when the count comes. As one labor leader puts it why shouldnt we be with the new party? Both of the old parties have turned us down. Under their jurisdiction we must not organize but capital has the right to organize. They want our vote now, but we are going to place it where it will do us' some good. The claim is also made that there will be at least 10,000 laboring men and their families who will vote the new ticket. The leaders of the old political parties are pleased, however, that the unions are not claiming all the votes and that a few will be left to divide among the major parties. er The close connection of certain officials of the Utah-Idah- o Sugar Company and the under cover men at the county building is very marked these days. LIVING COSTS Political predictions arc being made that wheat will go to $1.50 per bushel. That is fine for the farmer, but where does the laboring man get off? Wages are being cut right and left and 40 cents pet hour for labor is considered a big price. How a laboring man who gets $3 per day is going to pay over $3 for flour and 50 cents per pound for butter and feed an average family of six persons, besides paying high rent, is a problem yet to be solved. It appears that the controlling interests still believe that the war is on and they just cant get away from those war prices. If labor was paid upon the same scale there could be no complaint, lo knock down wages and boost the price of living will not make a hit and it does not argue for harmony. The Citizen is glad to hear that Mayor Ncslen has finally come to conclusion that the water solution is with the meter. It has taken him several years to find it out and we are glad to find him standing on firm ground at last. In the meantime, the city fathers ought to be casting about for water but not through a bond issue. Add half a mill to the taxes, (ore v5? enough to raise the proper amount and the bill will be paid. On a bond issue however the tax payer is required to pay double the amount necessary for the improvement. We have had enough of bond issues which were only originated for the loan sharks. The voters absence from the primaries is the gangs opporThe propaganda that has been at work lately is for a bond issue and there are. some who arc trying to scare the people into it. tunity. The city waterworks ought to be able to all necessary improveAll over the country a campaign is being waged to secure larger ments and then pay a big dividend. Why doesnt it? It appears that attendance at the political primaries. no public business can be made to pay. . Will delegates to the 'Republican State convention follow the of Harding, McKinley, Smoot, and Coolidge or that of the under cover men in Salt Lake county building? Much activity is taking place in the candidacy of judges for the Supreme Court. The most talked of arc D. N. Straup, J. M. Ritchie. W. M. McCrca, T. D. Lewis and' G. A. Iverson. President Coolidge will make few. if any, touring campaigns He evidently believes in behalf of himself during the campaign. that he can make more votes by attending strictly to business at Washington than lie could if he took to the road. Taxpayers if they would protect their dollars must go to the Republican primaries Friday. August 15th. |
