Electrical development and copper production are two of the great primary industries of the west and anything which encourages their development reacts for the benefit of every laboring man and community in the PRICE OF SILVER HAMMERED DOWN BY LONDON MARKET Lead Also Takes Tumble; Copper is Holding Steady; Big Strike Made in Cardiff Mine. Fred J. Price, who has just lately returned from the Cardiff mine in Big Cottonwood, reports the biggest ore strike found so far. The strike was west. FORD ASSEMBLING made about 1,000 feet south of the old ore body and has every indication of being a big find. It has already been opened up seventy feet, and according to present prices will bring about $60 per ton. Mr.- Price also reports, that easily thirty more men could be used in the mine. - is gradually hammering down the price of silver. We mine the metal and London sets the price. It is now selling around 62 cents, and London capitalists would he foolish to pay more for silver when they can mark the price for their profit and convenience. London - Lead has dropped from 8.60 cents to 6 cents. Early in the season it appeared as if the market would hold at around 8 cents, but the sluggish market has had its effect upon this metal also. Copper is holding at over 14 cents and appears to be stronger than usual at this time of the year when the demand is least. The present week witnessed wheat drop below the dollar mark. This is preparing the farmers for another jolt when they try to dispose of the crops about to be harvested. Wheat crops were never better or heavier than the present year because of the great deal of moisture and the backward spring which proved ideal for hay and grain. MEXICAN SILVER. One of the strongest influences to keep up silver prices in the market at present is probably the smaller imports from Mexico. Nominal shipments from that center are about 4,000,000 ounces monthly, but in April they were down to 1,800,000 ounces. Total silver now being used by the Mexican government for coinage purposes is esaround 3,000,000 ounces timated monthy. 1 PLANT. Henry Ford has selected this city for his western distributing point and will erect an assembling plant for automobiles. It means an added payroll for the city of several hundred men, which later may develop into the employment of two or three thousand men. It is said that the wages paid the men for eight hours work run from $6 to $8.40 per day. It means the bringing in of many new and efficient mechanics. It is really the beginning of an eastern exodus to this city to establish factories, assembling plants and storage plants for mater- ials to be distributed throughout this intermountain region. This will mean a great saving of freight rates and consequent reduced costs in certain lines of commodities of which the people will be directly benefited. Tlie building of the Columbia steel plant near this city has no doubt advertised Utah, more than anything else, and factory heads are just beginning to realize that there are heTe that must not be overlooked, and those who get in on the ground floor will be the ones to reap the richest harvests. Electrical authorities estimate that the capital needs for transmission line construction in the 'United States during the next five years will be over. $900,000,-00This represents a potential market for copper wire and cable of between 900,000,000 and 1,500,000,000 0. ut The Denver & Rio Grande-Wester- n railroad system showed in May an income deficit of $249,609, against a deficit of $183,290 in May, 1922. The increase of $66,319 may all be accounted for by increased charges on account of the improvement program being carried on by the receiver. Expenses in connection with this program increased $98,241 over similar ezpenses last year, and there was an income charge of $30,000 this year representing amortization of equipment trust notes. The improvement program therefor increased the profit and loss deficit in May by $128,-241. Eureka Diamond Fork road to be repaired. In the intermountain region every man who will work has a job. Seventeen per cent increase over last year in beet sugar acreage. Construction of big irrigation and power plants at Boulder Lake, Colo., Mesa, Ariz., and American Falls, Ida., is affording employment for several hundred men. Industrial plants linked with building materials are running to capacity. Employment is increasing in metal mining and the oil industry. New railroad construction in Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico is making more jobs for workers. Apathy still characterizes the wool situation in the west. During the two weeks ending June 23, only a few small sales have been reported in Montana, where producers apparently are holding firm or are making' arrangements to consign. The same period has seen practically no sales of importance in California, either by growers or dealers, the former being unwilling to release holdings at the prices offered while the latter aro not active. Reports from Wyoming indicate the existence of a practical deadlock, with buyers offering around 43 cents while growers are holding for 45 cents and more. The various reports show that approximately 18 per cent of the Montana clip, 45 per cent of the Wyoming clip, 75 per cent of the California clip, and practically all of the Washington, Arizona and Utah clips have been sold or shipped. .
