Show THE CITIZEN 10 t, I THE GREAT OUTDOORS I iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniii STREAMS CLEAR FOR FLY FISHING ALL OVER STATE Unusual Methods on Strawberry River Protested by Sportsmen; Horses Ridden Through Streams. Fishing has now settled down to a game in which the sportsman pits his wits against the natural instincts of the wily trout. The clear water shows up the amateur fisherman in his true light and he will find few trout. The more expert anglers will go on taking their fish. So far fishing has been very good, although there are indications that long before the close of the season it will be pretty hard to catch the limit only in a few limited places. Some very funny things happened on the strawberry on the opening of the season. The stream was closed above the Strawberry bridge where no fishing is allowed because there too many big spawners there? Then on the opening night of the season game wardens rode horses up and down the stream for the purpose of catching fishermen who could not sleep at night and who took a chance to fish during prohibitive time.. Now no one would imagine that a fisherman could be caught in that way. A man fishing could easily hear the splashing caused by the wading horse for a long distance and there would be absolutely no chance to make an arrest under such circumstances in the night. The boys believe that the riding of horses up and down the Strawberry river previous to the opening is an outrage and should be stopped. The method has been pursued for several seasons now and the blame has always been laid at the door of some of the resident farmers. However, this year it was found that at least one game warden was responsible for the trading. It is said that it is done to scare the fish as much as possible and to drive them down the river into the lake, which is more or less controlled by the Madsen brothers. If there are no fish in the river, the sports will go to the Madsen camp to get their fish. Boats and guides can be hired there. That is not all. It is said that for two weeks previous to the opening of the Strawberry season water was run through the spillway at the dam, and many Salt Lakers received invitations from some of the Madsen boys to come down and have a real fishing day. No friends could be taken along. Invitations were accepted and it did not take the guests long to snail in their limits. The same day the water was again turned off and the remaining fish went down stream with the receding water. If such conditions are going to be allowed to continue what does one think the future has in store for us? No one ever dreamed that the game wardens did the wading up and down the strawberry stream, which tactics for some reason or other have only cold-bloode- To verdant fields running all riot On July 23 there will be another ZllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllimillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllHIMIIIIIIIillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllHIlUIIIIIIMIIIIIIimillllU been resorted to now for the last two or three years, and the boys have greatly complained thereof, and they never dreamed that it was the game wardens doing the work. Walter Hughes, winner, and Clifford Reynolds, who finished second place road in the Fourth of July race, have been disqualified from first and second place by Referee Chas. Dowse, and first position was awarded to Anton Clawson, Jr.; second place to Nick Teerlink, and third place to George Clawson. All the riders were moved up two positions, owing to the disqualification. The two winners were caught and passed at Murray in the race by Clawson and Teerlink. However, soon after the two winners came along and took the lead again, being paced by an automobile and soon passed ahead and out of sight. There were eleven riders who protested the race. Phil Wright has received word from the Amateur Bicycle League of America to qualify two riders for the A. B. L. of A. championships which are to be held in Chicago during August. All expenses of the riders are to be paid to Chicago, railroad and Pullman fare, together with hotel expenses. Mr. Wright set about to secure a track to qualify the riders in the races required. He applied to some of the city commissioners for the use of the bicycle path in Liberty park which was built by the cyclists of the city, at no expense to the city, but was turned down fiat on the pretext that the sport was too dangerous. Bicycle racing is about as dangerous as a parlor ping-pon- g game. Mr. Wright then made application for the State Fair grounds track, but found that some of the state officials had a horror of bicycle racing and requested him to put up a $5,000 bond to race upon his partly owned track the grounds belong to the taxpayers, but the politicians reap the harvest, and the people have no say what they can do with their own property. Mr. Wright is a bicycle dealer and property owner of this city, and it is not very encouraging to a law abiding citizen when he is willing to lend his services gratis to help advertise the city and is met with opposition on every hand. Mr. Wright will find some place to hold the races to qualify two Utah champions to represent this state at the national meeet in Chicago. The qualification events will be: Onet-hirof a mile open, senior. Five mile open, senior. Onet-hirmile open, Junior. Tw.o miles open, junior. Clyde Edwin Tuck. FIRPO NEARS TITLE. Ri. Phone Wii. Luis Angel Firpo earns the right to meet Jack Dempsey in a match for the heavyweight championship of the world. Firpo put away Jess Willard in the eighth round of a scheduled contest. The fight was a hard one from beginning to end, but during the middle of the contest it appeared as if Willard would win. Firpo was a little wild at times, but he can take the gaff and he knows how to administer punishment. It was the first time since his fighting career that he used body punches, w'hich no doubt helped to undo the giant before him. Everyone appears to think that Firpo will give Dempsey a tough contest, but Jack is too clever for the South American, and ought to be able to win from him. However, Firpo is a heavier man than Dempsey and the cnampion will have to be in the best of condition if he expects to win. 12-rou- Office Phone 8384 7638J Ree. 555 West 1st North C.
