We know that she has tried several times entwine us by alliances with her so as. to bring to her side our great resources; to put our strength in men; our strength in money; our strength in other ways behind her ruling classes in their insistent effort to become the domiant world power. Those of us who have lived through the fights of the last few years know how close, two or three times, she came to success in her work ; and know, further, the courage of men and women of Irish that it was only through blood she was prevented from carrying her schemes through to success. It is now generally admitted in liberal circles even in England reand in France, that the war out of which the nations have so of England cently come, was a great economic struggle on the part to retain the supremacy of the seas, and to. regain tne commercial domination of the worlds She had made up her mind for twenty the destruction of years that that could be accomplished only by economic power that Germany ; by the breaking down of the strong And the ruling Germany had come to be throughout the world. classes of England, as never before, gave of their time and energy to would enable them to forge a ring of steel around Germany that annihilate her. Germany has been temporarily ruined but France has risen in her place. I think that France today could absolutely dominate the continent and compel it to do what she wished, within three or four In a short campaign she could annihilate the power of months. stands in England. Either solution spells trouble if not and England, by England. The English recognize that fact clearly, control of reason of that, is reaching out, as never before, to get America. Their people may not, at least temporarily, succeed success would not save England but it would bring suffering and loss, both of prestige and of power, to America. There is one safe course to pursue and that is to keep our feet on the ground and allow Europe to untangle her own troubles. It has been a continual fight on that continent for supremacy. It is a disease germ which, if we contract, will bring us ruin, as Georg,j Washington and all our big presidents down the line predicted if we allowed ourselves to become germinated. CORPORATIONS. The United States is the largest corporation in the world. Its board of directors consist of .congress and the president. These directors are selected by the voters as stockholders at the ballot box. Directors of private corporations are also selected by the stockholders. Directors of private corporations are selected with care arib because of their business ability. Directors of the United States are selected with little regard for experience or ability. That is the difference between private and public management. That is why private management is an economic success and public management an economic failure. That is why the United States is the most poorly and extrava- -' gantly managed corporation in the world. Many of its directors are incompetent to manage a corner grocwhich ery yet are entrusted with the management of a corporation directly concerns the welfare of 100,000,000 people. Indeed with all our resources one cannot look in on congress without wondering that the United States is not in the hands of a receiver. There are among its members men of mediocre ability, men of no business experience, men with no concept of fundamental requirements relating to finance, credit, production and merchandising of relaproducts, and with no proper understanding of interdependent tions between commerce and transportation. There are among them two men of disordered mentality purand posely set on breaking down the safeguards of individual rights heritages, communizing industry and substituting for the institutions of society, institutions basically and fundamentally foreign and socialistic. ideas ready d Then there is the blatant, demagogue with to run riot, ready to upset everything but offering nothing constructive in the way of a substitute. He attacks fiercely but blindly and the more he attacks the blinder he gets and the more he shows his incompetency. Is it any wonder that public, ownership or public managament is as economic failure? If this great corporation is to be economically and efficiently safeguards and institutions of society are managed, if to be preserved, if we are to escape the blight and curse of socialism of pujdic moving upon us like a thief in the night under the shelter ballot o4x ownership stockholders in selecting directors must at the exercise more care and prudence. We cannot continue to select blatant demogogues and incompetent and long escape economic diswell-order- ed , half-bake- well-order- ed aster. PRICE FIXING. Notwithstanding the fact that the national wheat conference recently held in Chicago rejected by a twp to one vote the proposal for federal valorization of wheat at $1.50 a bushel minimum, it is will witness rereported that the congress meeting next December newals of the effort to have the government guarantee this minin..phi price for wheat. It is earnestly to be hoped, and it is more than probable, that the measure will meet the defeat which it merits.
