Show THE CITIZEN 12 Camping, Fishing, Hunting, Athletics Illllllllll FISHERMEN GETTING READY FOR OPENING TROUT SEASON. Streams Are Clearing and Fly Fishing May Be Good; Waters Well Stocked With Trout. Next Friday morning at 4 oclock Commissioner Dave Madsen will fire the shot that will be heard in all parts of Utah where there is trout fishing, for at that time the season opens. As far as business is concerned, all houses might just as well close because a majority of the people will be out in the hills trailing the streams for trout. Where is the best place to go to catch fish? That is a general question put to everyone. It is also a foolish question. There are some isolated streams and lakes on our mountain peaks where the automobile cannot go, and that is about the only place where there will not be a crowfl. Good roads run along all our streams and beginning Thursday there will start a procession of automobiles and fishermen which will line the banks of every stream in the state. No ter where one goes there will be matplen- ty of company. However, those who go to the headwaters will have less competition. Streams Clearing. Streams have cleared considerable during the past week. In fact the Weber river, which is invariably muddy at this time of the year, was clear during the week and fit for fly fishing. With no rains and cool nights this will be a good stream on the opening day. Many trout have gone up the Provo river from Utah lake this year and no doubt the boys will get many big fish in this stream the opening day. There will be no fishing on the Strawberry river until July 1. However, below the dam fishing is allowed and many have decided to camp on the Stinking Springs site for their fish. There wrere millions of four trout in Indian creek last and summer and the fishing in that stream this season ought to be as good as in the days of old. Reports have it that East Canyon will be good. Many large fish have come up from the dam to spawn in the spring runs. There will be good fishing in Current creek and all the streams running into the Duchesne river. Those who wish to go to the Granddaddy lakes by taking pack outfits at the end of the automobile roads will be sure to have success in catching all the fish they desire. Lost creek, which flows into the Weber river near Morgan, has plenty of fish in it and the usual large crowd will five-inc- h be going there. East Canyon, below the dam, ought to be good on the opening day and it is a place where some big fish hold out. The Ogden river ought to begin showing results from the many thousands of fish planted there and there are many miles of the stream that can be fished. Further north there is Blacksmiths fork, and the Logan river and tributaries. Southern Streams. Going south there is Hobble Creek, Spanish Fork canyon and the Diamond, Mt. Nebo creek and the Price river, all of which ought to give the angler good results. Many are going to Fish lake to spend two or three days and some longer. With the present weather prevailing of not too warm days and cool nights the fishermen will be able to use the fly in a majority of the streams of the state. It is never too early to use the fly when the water is clear. Insect life begins to move about March 1 and the trout then begin to feed from the top of the water. During the winter months the fish are bottom feeders. The Salt Lake County Sportsmans Fish and Game Protective association held a meeting the first part of the week. Mr. Christopher gave the boys a splendid talk on stream pollution and it is a question upon which all campers ought to inform themselves. The association is also endeavoring to create enough interest to secure moving pictures of wild life in Utah. A moving picture show will be given in the near future showing hunting and fishing scenes to which only members of the association will be admitted. President Hopper presided at the meeting. CLASSIC DERBY. Jocky Donoghue won the British historic derby at Epsom Downs last Wednesday from a large field of the best gallopers of the world, bringing in Papyrus one length to the good under the wire. The king of England and all royalty,. together with several hundred thousand spectators, witnessed the sensational race, upon which millions of dollars changed hands. B. Irish, owner of Papyrus, became a rich man. The American jockey was presented with a pair of gold spurs for winning three derbys in succession, Donoghue being the only jockey who has ever accomplished the feat and which makes him the envy of all riders. BASEBALL. The Oakland and Salt Lake baseball teams will play a double header today as well as tomorrow, which will wind up the series. Los Angeles will be here to start next weeks series Tuesday and they are all primed to take the honey from the Bees. The Salt Lake team was getting pretty close to the cellar but Manager Duffy Lewis has hopes oh! what an encouraging word that his Bees will do some buzzing around the bases themselves from now on and take a majority of the future games. -- IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII1IIIIHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SAM SHARMAN WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE. 16-ya- . rd Ml. secretary and treasurer. miHIHIIIi A.
