Show THE CITIZEN 1 Gas Company Needs Higher Rates , TT has always been the policy of Salt Lake to be fair to its public utility corporations and as a result the people and the utilities have lived together in harmony. Sometime ago the Utah Gas & Coke Company applied for a modest measure of relief and was allowed to make a slight increase in its charges. We are confident that the average business man, at that time, could see that the charge would not be sufficient to protect the corporation against the soaring cost of labdr and all materials. The wonder was that the management of the Utah Gas & Coke Company did not ask for more. It was inevitable that the company, sooner or later, would be compelled to request the Public Utilities Commission for a revision of rates. utility cannot serve the public if it is run as a losing concern. ELLIS BROWNE, Attorney for to-wi- city. We believe, therefore, that the people generally will favor a revision of rates that will permit the Utah Gas & Coke Company to give the city maxi- mum service in the present and provide for repairs and extensions. Nor should the people be satisfied when they have, as they think, looked out for themselves. They should be, and are, willing that the corporations should pay a fair return on the money invested. A company that, year after year, pays no profit to its owner falls into a decline and the people are the ultimate sufferers. PROBATE AND GUARDIANSHIP NOTICES.
