Show I 4,000 enjoy Duchesne auto, air show The Labor Day Air and Auto Show is now' history, but in the minds of the nearly 4,000 spectators, it was definitely an afternoon well spent. Performers and just plain daredevils delighted the crowd with stunts of skill and nerve, as well as the always welcome presence of the clown to lighten things for the children. The day began with a fly-ibreakfast for pilots, attracting approximately GO planes from all over the intermountain area. After the breakfast, the people began arriving by land as well as air to view the displays and enjoy a radio controlled model aircraft demonstration by a Vernal dub, as well as skydiving. The afternoon entertainment and main body of the show kicked off promptly at 1:00 with the Alta Sky Diving Club parachuting to the ground to the strains of the national anthem, with Chuck' Carrothers circling the group in his tiny red and white plane. After this patriotic spectacle, the air show began with maneuvers by Carrothers including the hammerhead stall, spirals, rolls, and many, many more, sending the tiny Pitts Special soaring to heights of 12,000 feet and then plummeting to earth in end over end rolls or twists. Being a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, Corrothers practices his routines between sea level and t,UUU feet, but the elevation of the Duchesne Airport changed that from 6,000 to 12,000 feet, adding a new dimension to his aerobatics, and even higher level of an requiring concentration from the pilot. The thin air, lacking in body, would not support the plane at the speeds used at sea level to execute the complicated maneuvers. The altitude cuts down the horsepower of the engine, and decreases the "lift" of the craft, requiring more speed and n 7 have a nice weekend... V engine adjustments to pull the plane out of earthward movements and bark up skyward. Mr. Carrothers performed several stunts with the 200 HP biplane that few pilots attempt, including the inverted flat spin and the double Lomcevak, but he states that his most difficult maneuver of the show was the ribbon cut, also inverted. In this stunt, the "Flying Dentist" attempted to cut three ribbons, held on poles on the runway, 40 feet, 34 feet and 28 feet off the ground while flying the plane upside down. In his first pass, he cut the top (40 foot high) ribbon with the tail of the plane. On the second pass, he flew completely under the 34 foot high ribbon, cutting the 28 foot high ribbon with propeller of the plane, leaving the middle line undisturbed. Mr. Carrothers is' now headed for four more air shows and then the National Championship show in Sherman, Texas a month away. Alternating with the lofty stunts of Chuck Carrothers were the driving feats of 01ie Anderson and his daredevils, performing on the Duchesne airport runways. Driving Ford Mavericks with 302 engines, Olie and his Auto Daredevils executed stunts involving driving skill and coordination, as well as just plain daring. Olie himself, from Neola, performed two of the most amazing stunts of the afternoon, the High Skis which he also did in the movie "Gumball Rally" where the car maneuvered around the runway precariously balanc 3a ed on two wheels, and the car carrier jump, done with a junk car. Olie' son. Josh Anderson, at 9 years old the youngest professional daredevil in the world, rode a Yamaha 80 through a flaming board walL Ferron Wyasket of Ft. Duchesne also did many of the car and motorcycle driving including a graphic head on crash in a junk car to demonstrate the force of impact of auto accidents. He also provided the crowd and crew with a very tense moment when, while performing the dynamite death chair, where he sat in a box and detonated live dynamite charges while in a yoga-lik- e state. Evidentally, the charges went off before the necessary 6 second concentration period after countdown when he relaxes his body in preparation for the impact, but he was nut seriously injured although shaken. Other stunts were performed by Vic and Olan Davis, Gregg Horrocks, Anderson, nephew of Olie who played Gazebo the daredevil clown. Crew members are Claude Miller and George Bachman, with Ken Rand of KOAL in Price announcing. Clark and Laura Jensen would like to thank all those who contributed to the Auto, Airshow at Starvation Sky Ranch and especially those who attended the show to make it a success. A special appearance was made by Beverly Turner, Mrs. Experimental Aircraft Association for 1977. Mrs. Turner won her crown at the Oshkosh, Wisconsin airshow, the largest antique homebuilt air show in the nation.
