Show Y CC program workers complete project at Natl. Wildlife refuge Some twenty people ages 15-- 18 from Vernal, Roosevelt, Myton, Ft Duchesne and Duchesne will wind up their present job this week with the Youth Conservation Corp. (YCC) working on a federal program sponsored by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife service. Located on the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge the group are one of 250 other YCC camps in the United States. The young people on. the Ouray National Refuge have been involved in several work projects including building 4Vt miles of fence for refuge boundaries, worth approximately $6,000 and tore down and removed 5Vi miles of fence worth approximately $3,000. The youth painted the headquarters house and other buildings at Browns park National Wildlife Refuge, built a new fence and removed an old one, landscaped and etc. They also participated in the program at Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery where they constructed concrete walks and platforms, landscaped and clipped one fine each on 5000 hybrid trout as part of a lonevity study being conducted. The youth painted the office, shop, and other structures at the Ouray Refuge and did waterfowl nesting census at and near the refuge, to determine the success rate of waterfowl production methods. It was derided by the council to appoint John Gale to the Board of Mosquito Abatement Program replacing Verlyn Stewart. Thomas J. Abplanalp and Ron Johnson met with the Council to sign the application for the Public Works money. The Council authorized and empowered the Mayor to execute the application, and Mr. Johnson and Thomas J. Abplanalp represented the Duchesne County School Board. Applications are to be mailed August 10, 1977. The council agreed to approve the engineers agreement for the Public Works Application as amended. The council agreed to adopt the following resolutions: Resolution 77-3A resolution providing for the issuance of payment to Engineers Construction, Inc. in the amount of $104,769.34 for final payment estimate Nil schedule L A resolution providing for the issuance of payment to Engineers Construction, Inc. in the amount of $33,259.04 for final payment estimate 11 schedule H. David Brobac, Camp Director stated, "In summary we've had a very full and many accomplishing busy summer projects. Much of the work can't be seen (such as removing old fence and trash) but its all contributed to making the three places we've worked more esthetic, organized and efficient Our program has also resulted in a more environmentally aware group of young people. Twenty five percent of the 40 hour week have been devoted to environmental education and we feel the time has been well spent Mr. Brobac said. Mr. Brobac noted that the staff working with the group feels they have had a very successful summer and program and forsee the area having many more such programs at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge. Herb Torrester, Refuge manager, stated that the purpose of the program is threefold, first to provide needed conservation work on public lands and which he says they could not afford otherwise; to provide meaningful employment for the areas young people and to help develop in participating youth an appreciation for the nations natural environment and natural heritage. Each entitlement was worth $7.29, which made the total sale worth $303,562.89.
