Connections fastened, protective castings and other parts of each system should be expertly checked for conditions that could be hazardous during operation. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, as part of its courtesy motorboat examination, also checks the configuration and working order of navigation lights; devices; anchor and anchor line, and ventilation systems, among others. If a plaque attached to the craft does not indicate maximum speed or power output under optimum conditions, check with the manufacturer. One of the most important ingredients of safe boating, says the I.I.I., is the operator who uses his craft only in waters and weather with which it can cope. People have limitations, too. It's worth noting from Coast Guard statistics that the highest percentage of boating injuries and fatalities occur in clear weather with good visibility, in calm water and light This wind. either poor suggests maintenance or poor navigation. David McMullin was recently sworn in as the newest board member of the Central Utah Project. McMullin fills the position that was vacated by Sterling Jones, who had served on the board since 1964 as the representative form Utah County. Before seekers of easy adventure cast themselves onto the waters, the Insurance Information Institute suggests boat operators do some careful preparation on land to help assure a safe reason for themselves and their crews. The U. S. Coast Guard accident statistics indicate the bleak reality of what can go wrong on the waters: fires and explosions can cause thousands of dollars in damage and ruin high expectations for leisure time; boats that are swamped, capsized or sunk often result in drownings. Utah may seem far removed from the concern of the U. S. Coast Guard, but the agency reported 25 boating accidents, eight fatalities and over $56,000 in property damage during 1974, which is hardly cause for boasting. The Institute notes that no matter how well designed and engineered a boat is, using it in the wrong waters, or trying to exceed the limitations for which it was built automatically make it unsafe.
