O STANDARD MAY 22, 1975 Local student rated excellent in chemistry Five high school chemistry students in Utah's central and aouthern regions have been awarded certificates of excellence following results of the Annual High School Chemistry Contest sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Central Utah Section. Dr. Delbert Eatough, of the Brigham Young University Center for Thermochemical Studies, announced that the five outstanding students are Derek Muse and Doug Walker, Orem high school; Tom Ronacci, Carbon high; Reed Jeffery, Delta high; and Daniel J. Lee, Dixie high. These winners also each received a handbook and a year's chemistry subscription to Chemistry" magazine. Teachers of three of these students were also honored by the society: Ed Tonsik and Martin Monson, Orem high; and Fay Jacobson, Delta high. A total of 88 students took the test at BYU Saturday representing 13 high schools in the state. The two-hoexamination covered regular and advanced high school chemistry. Both Muse and Walker were named top students in the contest, while Ronacci was named top student in the Eastern Utah Region, Jeffery the top student in the Central Utah Region, and Lee the top student in the Southern Utah Region. Orem high had 38 students competing, with 11 receiving certificates of excellence and "Chemistry magazine for one year: Rod Beeston, Daniel Bertch, Jeff J. Christensen, Lynn Gordon, Robert C. Hendricks, David Merrill, Allen Miglore, Matt Parsons, and Andrew Max Winkler. Certificates of excellence and the magazine were also presented to Brent Christensen, top student from Provo high; Steven Jensen, top student from Cedar high; David Christian, Dixie high; Neal Peacock and Delroy Brinkerhoff, top students from Emery County high; Dell Ray Anderson, top student from Manti high and second in Central Utah Region; Kevin L. Curtis, top student from Richfield high; and Steven Hamblin, top student from Union high. CANT WIN Nothing seems to work for old Fred these day's. Low income survey to be conducted A survey of the Duchesne and Uintah will soon be County low income people taken by the Uintah Basin Association of Governments and the Division of Family Services. Letters are being sent out to low income persons or groups who will be asked to present their views on what they think is needed for future programs in this area. If a person is not contacted by letter and would like to join in a group to discuss what they feel is needed in the area, contact the Division of Family Services. A paid director and paid interviewer will be selected from these groups to coordinate and conduct the surveys. Applications are now being accepted at the Division of Family Services for these positions. During a Mountain States Barrel held in Race Racing Association Duchesne May 17, winners in the Novice division were: 1st, Cindy Williams, 2nd place Bonnie Barker, and third and fourth place were tied for by Sandy Thomson and Marilyn Priest. In the open division: 1st was Bobette Warren. Racing officers have announced that the next race will be held at Dixie Allen's arena, in Vernal, on May 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sign up will be at 6:00. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harvey are the proud parents of a new baby daughter born May 14th at the Roosevelt hospilaL The baby weighed 7 lbs. and 14 oz. The Harveys now have four ehildren, two boys and two girls. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Riley and daughter and children from Ncterland, Colorado, visited Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Goodrich. The Aaronic Priesthood and Young Women held a Fireside Sunday night. Their mothers were special guests. Ashley Bartlett was guest speaker. He is 95 years old. Several mothers enjoyed Girls Day with their daughters at West Jr. High Thursday. Each mother was presented a corsage. Jean llaslem spent the weekend at home wiih her parents. Jean is a student at Snow College in Ephraim. Ashley Martlet t was a visitor Sunday at the Clyde Merkley home. Lenford and Reba Kitchen from American Fork and Belva Chamberlain spent Mothers Day with Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Kitchen. The students from Union high school have been busy running this week. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was Sadie Hawkins Days. Mr. and Mrs. Wales Kibbey from Fresno, Calif., and Gertrude Cavanaugh from Chick, California returned to their homes Monday after a ten day visit at the Ernest Ahlborn home. Peggy Ahlborn who is working in Salt Lake also spent the weekend at home with her parents. USU names area honor roll students Names students of Utah State University who achieved the honor roll for Quarter, 1975, have been Winter announced. In order to be included on honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time minimum for undergraduates and 12 credits for graduates) and have a grade point average of 3.5 or better (4.0 is it straight A).
