Telephone directory assistance, a costly business Back in 1908 when the Wasatch telephone building was completed in Sait Lake, Information" consisted of six positions. Things are a little different at Mountain Bell today, according to Exchange Manager Theo W. Perkins. it takes 303 employees Now, statewide to handle directory assistance calls, and we need to take a good look at the costs involved in providing the service vs. who is using the service." Perkins stated that on an average business day, 72.333 calls are placed to telephone directory assistance-costi- ng customers $2,285,000 last year. The name directory assistance is an accurate of what our description doing-aidi- ng be should employees customers who are having difficulty finding a listing in the book, or giving out of the new numbers. Instead, 78 numbers requested in Utah are already in the book. Studies indicate that only 15 of the calls, of the people make 50 Perkins said. The average customer who uses this service only occasionally is placed in the position of having to subsidize those who call directory assistance frequently. Wyoming and Colorado have filed rate plans with their regulatory commissions. The basic features of the plan they submitted includes: three free calls a month two number searches per call $.20 per call (after the free allowance) tn 411 and (1) (universal information for home area only-ncharge for other area codes) exclusions would include coin, hospital and hotel guest phones, and the handicapped. Cincinnati Bell has had a sijnilar charge for over a year. Their experience shows (1) an 80 reduction in calls to directory of the assistance and (2) only 5 customers are charged in any given month. Perkins sized up the situation in Utah like this: We have used advertising to encourage proper use of directory assistance, given away personal directories to record frequently called numbers, and agreed to provide directories free from other cities when used for long distance calling. All these measures have helped somewhat, but we're faced with ever increasing volumes of calls and the related costs. If the current trend continues, it would appear that the only equitable way to handle the situation would be to charge those persons who are the heavy users of the service instead of the expecting everyone to equally-sharcost." Six bustling positions is all it THE GOOD OLE DAYS took to handle calls to directory assistance in Lake in Salt 1 908. Today, more than 300 Mountain Bell in Utah are required to provide the employees service. -- 555-121- 2 Deseret Federal o Mrs. Carol Hosloy Visiting in Springville last week was Zelma Lloyd who spent the week visiting with her brother Mr. and Mrs. Willard Day and a sister.
