Congratulations to the members of Culture Club and those other organizations working with them for the community spirit. And. speaking of community apirit, what has happened to all of the community spirit that used to be so prevelant? What is happening to our civic dubs. As I understand it, membership is diminishing in most of them. Lions and Kiwanis Clubs are barely hanging together only because of the efforts of very few dedicated persons. Is it that we are too busy to become involved in our community, or is it that we lack the community spirit of doing things together look back L for the good of all? As I worthwhile the at many retrospect projects carried on by these dvie organizations, such as the annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Kiwanis. I can see a definite need for more participation by these types of organizations for interaction of our townspeople in order to become better acquainted with one another, more tolerant of the beliefs and ideas of others as well as a unselfish service to the community, a good rut" to be in! I certainly commend these organizations for the service projects which they have carried on for the benefit of the community and growth of dub members. Bell GOVERNMENT HELP NOT NEEDED The best thing the government can do to help insure against another energy shortage is to stay out of the matter. This would appear to sum up the sentiments of the independent business community currently according to a just completed survey on energy conducted for the National of Federation Independent Business by an indeendent research firm. This viewpoint prevails even though over 80 per cent anticipate fuel shortages of varying degrees over the next 10 years. The data was gathered in March by Faculty Associates, Inc., headed by Joseph Fee, president, with the research conducted under the direction of Dr. Richard Bailey of the University of California at Berkeley and Dr. William Dunkelberg of Stanford, with a broad cross section sample of the NFIB membership. The independent business people turn thumbs down quite emphatically on the idea of raising taxes on fuel, or on any plan to ration fuels. Asked if they felt the government should raise taxes to discourage the use of fuel and use those taxes to help those hurt by any future fuel shortage, only 1.4 per cent of the respondents saw any merit in this administration advanced proposal. Only slightly more, 4.6 per cent are in favor of any rationing of fuel, and only 1.7 per cent believe the government should attempt to store fuel. In fact there was no majority in favor of any government action in this matter. The largest vote for government was involvement to launch a program to educate the public about the fuel conservation, and this only totalled 44.7 per cent of the total on responsdents. Next to this type of action the data gathered for the NFIB shows 26.6 per cent favor encouraging investment in the production of more energy, while 12.6 per cent feel that the matter of adjustment of the energy supply should be left to the market mechanism. While the data does not go into this area, the apparent lack of support for government intervention indicated by the results may merely reflect a lack of faith in government to solve the problem. Some support is given this surmise by the finding that currently 17.3 per cent of the respondents anticipated more severe fuel shortages in the next ten years, or an increase of almost 4 per cent since the NFIB surveyed in January. Over the next ten years an additional 41.5 per cent feel there will be less fuel available than in the past decade, but also believe there will be enough if there is some care exercised in its usage. Only 2.5 per cent believe there will be no repeat of the energy shortage and another 13.9 per cent anticipate minor shortages but in the overall a plentiful supply. Another 21.7 per cent feel there will be some major shortages in the next 10 years but no worse than the recent shortage. Thus, while over 80 per cent of the responsdents feel there will be fuel shortages of varying degrees over the next ten years, the vast majority of these respondents feel that the nation can live with the situation, and that governement intervention is not necessary. The NFIB survey does not probe into attitudes of the independent business people on the possible impact on the economy of heavy expenditures for foreign oil. A YES VOTE IS NEEDED A yes vote is needed next Tuesday when residents of Roosevelt go to the polls to decide the fate of a sewage bond issue. A new sewage system is needed. Weve long since outgrown the one we have. And since funds are available the Environmental through Protection Agency to help eliminate conditions that are detrimental to the environment. Now is the time to enlarge our present system. And with interest rates and somewhat, moderating construction costs down from their e high, it is felt that a good bid could be received, if the project is bid now. And we feel the proposed plan is feasible. It will handle present needs plus anticipated growth. It will protect the surface water from contamination, and also provide a means of utilizing all of the outfall water through a all-tim- sprinkler irrigation system. This same irrigation system will create revenue that will pay the costs of treatment of the citys waste water. But in order to move into the project, your vote is needed next Tuesday.
