Show STANDARD JUNE 20, 1974 Committee to study beef price difference At a June the Senate's subcommittee on consumers will attempt to find out why falling farm prices are not being followed by lower prices at the supermarket, according to Utah Senator Frank E. (Ted) Moss. 24 hearing The Consumer Subcommittee Chairman announced scheduling of the hearing today saying, It appears that somewhere between the feed lot and the shopping basket, someone is making enormous profits and the consumer subcommittee intends to find out just who it is. Moss said the subcommittee will call witnesses representing cattlemen, feed lot operators, meat wholesalers, retail food marketers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A witness list will be announced later. Despite the rapid decline in prices at the farm level," Moss explained, "the price of food at the retail level has in most cases, remained at record highs. Since last summer, feed lot steer prices have dropped as much as $200 a head, but this drop in price has not been passed on to the shopper at the supermarket The obvious question is: what has happened to the $20?" Senator Moss said that in his home State of Utah, the declining cattle prices have put several cattlemen and feed lot operators "on the verge of bankruptcy. He said the situation seems to bis the same in most other parts of the country. Moss lauded the committee on agriculture and forestry plans to begin con- sideration Monday of proposed guaranteed loan programs to livestock producers. He also noted that a group of senators are asking the white house to impose import quotas on meat But while I believe that the economic situation facing our livestock producers has become so precarious that import quotas are now justified, said Moss, it will be difficult to justify quotas to the American consumer, who is still paying the same high prices for beef at the sup- ermarkets."
