Utahs birds of prey, or raptores as the group is called, vary in size from the small inconspicuous pygmy owl to the magesty of the bald eagle. The bald eagle is a common winter resident of Utah. The largest numbers of these birds are found in the west deserts of the state, but the Uintah Basin can boast of being the winter home of many of the birds which are the symbol of our country. The distinctive white head and tail are not complete until about the fifth year of the eagles life. Before these features develop, the bird is sometimes difficult to distinquish from the golden eagle. The immature golden eagle can be identified by the single white patch on the underside of its wing. The juvenile bald eagle on the other hand has much of the underside of its wing covered with patches of white. Another winter resident of Utah is the rough-legge- d hawk. This bird will be abundant in the Basin until late February. At this time they will leave to make their nests in the trees and rocky shelves of Canada and Alaska. The rough leg is easily observed because of its habit of perching on fence posts and power poles. This habit also makes him an easy target entries. ... Use any slip of paper for entry 2.
