Willis Eken, Twin Valley out my involvement with Right to Life of Utah is the fact that it has introduced me to so many very special people. I'd like to tell you a little about them. These people are, by nature, GENEROUS GIVERS. They offer their prayers, thoughts, energies and monies to women they dp not know, babies they cannot see. They give away weeks, months, even years of their lives simply because they care deeply about young and old, bom and preborn, healthy and infirm, normal and handicapped. Such generosity has its drawbacks, since it takes them away from the loved ones who mean so much to them. But Rightto Life people have learned that it is sometimes necessary to leave the home in order to protect those who live inside it. Right to life people are, by necessity, COURAGEOUS LEADERS. -- They defend the defenseless at cocktail parties,' women's club meetings, neighborhood They voice their firm convictions on radio and TV programs, at political conventions, at fairs and seminars. Such bold advocacy is not easy, since it is so often met with apathy, argument or even open hostility. But Right to Life people have discovered. that malicious attacks and alienation are preferable to silence in the face of atrocity. Right to Life people'are, by the grace of God, ETERNAL OPTIMISTS. They insist that, for every personal and societal problem, there is a positive and compassionate solution. They believe that, once people learn the facts about the anti-lif- e trend, they will reject it and help us to stop it. Such optimism is sometimes difficult, since Right to Life efforts are periodically thwarted by the press, the politicians and the public. But Right to Life people have realized that, can always where there's a will, they and their pro-lif- e God find a way. . Who are these Right to Life people? Well, there's Dennis and Julie, Keith and Arlene, Eleanor and Brad, Iris and Lynn. There's Kay and Julia and Irvin and 56-58- Yesterday the people in Bemidji and other places were not . ... . tU activists out of Theres Don, whose ability.to make pro-limere acquaintances has drawn in enough people for, not one, but three new chapters. There's Janet, whose concern and willingness cause her to offer her home for monthly board meetings, to keep and answer the busy Right to Life phone. And theres Margaret, whose pro-lif- e activity began before Right to Life even formed. In the past, Margaret organized beautiful January 22nd Memorials, made arrangements for the Right to Life booth at the State Fair, and spizzed us all up with h er tireless enthusiasm. ARIX, a professional corporation of Grand Junction, Colorado has issued to the U.S. Department of Energy a report entitled Engineering Assessment of Uranium Mill Tailings Involvement at Salt Lake County, Utah Fire Station No. 1 . It is dated July 1979. On the last page of the report it is stated that total estimated cost to completely rehabilitate Salt Lake Countys Fire Station No. 1, is $353,600, while the cost to replace this station with one just like it is estimated to be $566,000 to $666,000. These estimates compare to Chief Barretts estimate of over $2,000,000 needed for his proposed replacement station. REHABILITATED SCHOOL ARIX is the group which rehabilitated the high school in Grand Junction, Colorado which also had used uranium mill tailings as fill material as Fire Station No. 1 did. The high school, which would have cost rehabilitated for less than $1 --million. $4-milli- on to replace was SEQUENTIAL EXCAVATION The rehabilitation technique which is used by ARIX' involves sequential excavation with redwood shoring to prevent building settlement. It is similar to tunneling and mining in heavy ground. The steps involved in the job are listed in the estimate and include: Remove (and later replace) reinforced slab. Remove tailings and replace with compacted fill. Temporary wall supports. Replace floor coverings. Clean repair and restore to original condition. Mine under footings, replace tailings with concrete; assuming entire original structure footings are on tailings and none under south addition footings. In addition to the above described work within the boundaries of the building itself, the price estimated also includes removing all tailings 10 feet out from the structure. DOE WILL PAY If the Department of Energy (DOE) accepts this proposal it will pay the cost of rehabilitating this station. It will not give cash in lieu of rehabilitation, nor will it agree to build any other station elsewhere in exchange for the present station. While the cost of rehabilitation will be paid from taxes, the taxpayers who will help foot this bill, if DOE pays, are all taxpayers in the nation and the cost is cent per taxpayer. If only Salt Lake County taxpayers must bear the burden the cost is $3.21 per taxpayer. Then, if County Commissioners opt fora completely new station on 4.5 acres of land, the cost per taxpayer to pay that $2.1 --million is $19 per taxpayer. Forbid them to fund typhoid epidemic. This complicated structure may work after a fashion, but it remains to be seen if it can maintain a balance between all groups of producers and top-hea- vy - consumers. It is my opinion that after a few years, the inflationary rate will again take off into the wild, blue yonder, maybe not to the forcing another major extent of 1,000 to one, as it was in 1964, but nevertheless, a very major reorganization. I doubt if any economy can withstand such violent shocks and contortions. I believe that the Brazilian middle class is being destroyed and that the government will have to assume more and more direction of the economic life of the d hunger, rioting, people in order to prevent and breakdown of law and order.
