Nor has any consolidation reduced the total cost of the governments involved. But, what is there anywhere in the Charter of Unification for Salt Lake Gty and County which provides for cutting taxes? There is NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. In - fact, the Charter explicitly provides that persons working in the various governments to be unified shall not be discharged. Thus, with no cut in personnel, where are the vaunted economies which would allow tax cuts? These, facts raise the question, then, how can the promoters of consolidation (unification) make the claim that .voting for solidation will bring a cut in our Is it an error, a taxes? misunderstanding, or worse? ASK WRITTEN WARRANTY Just for fun (because thats all itll amount to) ask a Unificationist if he will give you a written warranty that your own County and City taxes will be cut, if unification passes. On the other hand, the records show, where statistics are available, that costs, taxes, and government charges rise more after unification than ifit had not taken place. (Cf. Responsiveness and Consolidation by Carver in Urban Affairs Quarterly, December 1973, on increased costs in Jacksonville, Fla. after conThe solidation. A Dear Editor ' Nearly every day I listen to the two-wa- y radio, I subscribe to your paper, and now Im asking you if you could answer a question that 'has constantly returned to me. Quite a few people continually criticize the Federal Employees. I must say. Im getting sick and tired of some comparing them as equal to Welfare. It seems as though the people blame them for the continuing rise in the cost of living. Do those who are so bitter against the Employees ever stop to ' think that perhaps those very people working for the government would like veiy , very much to work for private industry or, better-yet- , have their own businesses? You say, why dont they? Well, here are some of the reasons. One of the first is the government itself. Due to so many rules and regulations, those who are lucky enough to have their own businesses cant afford to hire more . bureaucratic The people. organizations (who make . their own rules) make stipulations about the working areas that after com- plying with them, the owners can no longer afford to pay high enough wages for people to earn a In my opinion, if the living. government would do away .with ; the restrictions, regulations, and sometimes some of : unrealistic rules and allow-mor- e Free Enterprise to come into existence, there wouldnt, be so many Federal Employees. Many of these are good workers and give' 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay, and then some. Ill admit there are some drones who make a bad name for government workers, but don't they have dronesln every business? Another thing do those who criticise the Federal . Employees ever stop to think that every time they get a raise, theyre put into a higher income bracket and thus must pay the higher income taxes? So please stop making a goat of those federal workers because, as I said before, in all probability they have tried to get other jobs with no success. So they had to work for the government or go on the real welfare where there are many who hate the socialistic way of living, and if they could get work would grab at the chance to get off the welfare rolls. They feel its degrading as it takes all incentive away from people. Lets get men into office who will fight for the return of Free Enterprise to our system. .. Respectfully, ' Mrs. D.A.
