In 1974 Carter established Georgias Commission on the Status of Women. Such commissions are, of course, funded for anti-lif- e, A feminists. Then Carter gained national prominence as the Democratic candidate for President. He had (according to the September 18, 1976, issue of Nation ) direct personal involvement in inserting the plank in the Democratic platform. He virtually denied prolife candidate Ellen McCormack access to the convention. And he chose, as his running mate, a man with an unblemished record in the Senate. Once elected, Carter appointed anti-lifMidge Costanza as his liaison with womens groups. Costanza adamantly refused to see a single representative of any prolife group...yet welcomed Gay Rights folks with open arms.-Carter also found work for Dr. Peter Bourne, one of the appdlants in both the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton abortion cases. During last years struggle to stop federal funding of abortion. Carter said not a word...a direct contrast to his outspoken support of the ERA. (And when the unsatisfactory compromise finally ended the Hyde debate, the Carter administration' issued the- very weakest regulations possible!) Now Carter has replaced Cos- tanza with Sarah Weddington, who represented Roe in the infamous abortion case; who served as president of the National Abortion Rights Action League for two years; who, as one longtime Washington lobbyist says, has done more public touting of abortion than Midge Costanza and Bella Abzug put together. In Washington By U.S. Senator Orrin G. Hatch ns pro-ER- PRO-LIF- E By Connie M. Pratt pro-aborti- If one did not know about President Carters past and present position on abortion, one would be inclined to view him as a supporter of human rights, an advocate of peace, a Christian conscience for the country. But Carters plea for human rights around the world are simply empty words when he denies Americas' tiniest residents their most basic right. His efforts to establish peace in the Mideast mean little when he so obviously has declared war on the prebom and those who seek to defend him. And his statements become just so much political PR when he ignores the loving lessons preached by Christ. Oh, I know Carter always insists he is personally opposed to abortion. I know he made a campaign promise to stop government funding of the slaughter. And I know he said, at a recent town meeting, that even one abortion is too many. But Carters running record means far more than his recent remarks. And from his Georgia days, Jimmy Carter has had a strong and abortion connection. In 1970 the Atlanta press quoted him as saying, I think that ultimately, in our rapidly expanding population, we may need to liberalize Georgias abortion laws. In 1971 Carter said public funds should be considered for welfare abortions. In 1972 he wrote a laudatory Foreward for a book called Women In Need (Trussell and Hat Bible-quoti- ng well-document- ed - non-therapeu- tic pro-aborti- Time Is Running Out On The Bureaucracy Rules 'Committee th important promises must stick in his throat like Georgia peanut butter! More than 50 bills under the "Sunset" label have been placed in the Senate hopper with more than half of the Senators supporting the measure introduced by Maine Senator Edmund S. Muskie. It was the Muskie bill, by Utah's two Senators, which was recently approved by the Rules Committee and sent to the floor for debate. Concerning that bill Sen. Muskie has said, 'This legislation offers the Congress a constructive, responsible method for responding to complaints that the American people aren't getting their money's worth out of the tax dollars they pay. .This legislation is one of the most er Carters ... .
