That controversial National Womens Conference which concluded over the weekend in Houston may well prove to be more detrimental to the cause of womens rights than helpfui. It was offered as a vehicle for (1) sampling the feelings of all American women and (2) formulating a national program reflecting these goals. Throughout last summer there was a recurring allegation, both locally and nationally, that the whole affair was not truly representative of all American women; that, instead, it had been taken over by fringe elements of the womens liberation movement. By dwelling heavily on the Equal Rights Amendment and such issues as equality for lesbians, the Houston conference did nothing to dispel these charges. Indeed, the picture presented to the' country over the weekend was that of closed shop radicalism which tolerated no moderation. In the long run, such a profile may alienate even more American women to the end that the over-al- l cause of Any Senator naturally has the right to vote any way he wants and to give his reasons. am not here 1 for the purpose of trying to prevent any Republican or Democrat from committing political suicide. 1 am not here even in behalf of my own party, for if 1 were, I would remain silent and hope that the treaty be adopted and that would bring back the Republican party in the biggest landslide that ever occurred. But I am here as an American who loves our country and wants to see its nuclear defense weapons strengthened immediately so no nation would ever dare attack and destroy the United States. And in conclusion I quote a statement made by Max Eastman, a well i adieu I and known former Socialist, who said: One thing, one thing only can save freedom and democracy and that is a clear and bold understanding. Freedom and democracy must have from its leaders incisive and uncompromising exposures of the barbaric nature of the Communist society and the devious methods of the Communist attack. T he closer our military and economic cooperation may be, the more pitiless must these exposures be. You cannot save democracy by shutting vour eyes to the horrors of dictatorship. You cannot stop the night from falling by turning the lamps down. In case any supporter of President Carter, who when a candidate for office a year ago pledged never to surrender actual control of the canal, should take exception to my criticism of the President or members of his administration, let me quote what former President Theodore Roosevelt said: To announce that there must be no criticism of the President or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American people. Nothing but the truth' should be spoken about him or anyone else, but it is even more important to tell the truth - pleasant or (End unpleasant - about him than anyone else. of Quote) In an effort to subvert the Constitution and aid in the Administration's efforts to give away the Panama Canal and Zone, Attorney General Griffin Bell claims that the House of Representatives has no say on the canal treaty. To the contrary, appropriations would be necessary, to supply the millions of dollars the Carter boys plan to give the Panamanian dictator along with the Canal and Zone. Furthermore, property owned by the States cannot be given away without the authority of the House of Representatives. While every possible form of pressure is being utilized by the Carter Administration to sway public opinion in favor of the canal giveaway, many U.S. Congressmen and Senators have made it clear that we own the Canal and Zone just as surely as wc own Alaska. The attempt, therefore, to weaken our national security by. relinquishing what rightfully belongs to us borders on treason pio-Bolshcv- womens equality willsuffer. ik U-nit- Extra copies of this issue 500, 5 for $1, 50 for $5, 100 for $10.
