A recent news item datelined Washington (AP) and entitled Unintended bonus threatens Fed pension system is a glaring example of slanted reporting indulged in by our national media. According to the article a quirk in federal law allows retired civil service employees to get unintended millions in extra dollars in pensions due to The increases. reporter ignores the fact that the law was primarily intended to protect Congressmen and other Federal officials pensions against the ravages of inflation and the lowly Federal civil servants were a The secondary consideration. reporter ignores the fact that these same congressmen and officials are the sole cause of inflation. He also ignores the fact that the federal pension system was actuarily sound until these congressmen and officials began their funny money policies. He ignores the fact that many wage contracts and long term purchase contracts are tied to the index because of this inflation. The sad part is that our governments fiscal policies mean economic ruin to this country. Our lawmakers cannot cry innocence. There are too many examples of the inexorability of Greshams Law, which states that Bad money drives out good money. The Byzantine Empire enjoyed 800 years of economic success until the rulers began to debase their coinage. France, was in economic ruin due to the issuance of large amounts of paper currency from 1 789 to 1 796; England for the same reason 1797 to' 1821; Germany in more recent memory in 1923, when it topk a wheelbarrow full of paper currency to buy a loaf of bread; the Massachusetts and Pennsylvania colpnfes in 1690 and the United States in 1777?178I with the issuance of the paper continental, whence originated the saying, Not worth a Continental. History has shown us that paper money is good as a medium of exchange only when it is backed by gold or silver, or as long as people have confidence in its value as a medium of exchange. Our paper currency has no backing and our coinage has been debased. cost-of-livi- one-thir- cost-qf-livi- people. ng ever-growi- ng NORTHWOOD INSTITUTE Economics Department Abuses of our nation's welfate system by aliens ' in five states (Illinois. cost California, Florida, New York. A and needs. News items Must Be Fully Documented. We want to print ONLY THE TRUTH! Many thanks. Federal workers living in the posh areas around the District of Columbia have higher incomes than workers living in any. similar-size- d territory in our country. It would seem, therefore, that government is the most successful poverty fighter. All we need to do, apparently, is to extend the District of Columbia to cover the whole country and advance everybodys income by 50 percent. Little if any wealth, however, is created by these federal employees. If we all became civilian workers, who would pay the taxes? As pointed out in a recent issue of The New Repub-li- e, the Presidents deputy press secretary, age 26, is paid $48,500 a year. Rosalynn Carters press secretary gets $45,000 a year, $14,000 more than was paid to Mrs. White House aides, Fords press secretary. Forty-nin- e some of them still in their 20s, make upwards of $40,-00- 0 a year. Political plums indeed! Counting federal, state and municipal employees, about one in every five of us are in this preferred class. Members of Congress draw $57,500 a year in salary, plus in many cases, an equal or greater amount in fringe benefits and fees for speaking engagements. The government knows how to cure poverty, all right the poverty of its own ranks and political supporters, while we have to pay for the privilege of suffering under the regulations which they impose upon d us. It is probable that about of the money the American people earn is ripped off by the regulations and waste imposed upon us by these privileged A policies . . Continued on page Some leading Democrats are now whispering that Jimmy Carter might not even be able to win again, much now that less knows him the nation better. And these people are U.N. former suggesting Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan as a darkhorse for the Democratic nomination should Carters next ten months be as chaotic as his first ten months. So that we may get to know Moynihan better, before its too late, read and save the following news item from The New York' Post a few days ago: Midge Costanza's knees may be cute, but Daniel Moynihan had his eyes and his hands - on another part of her body. All of which brings to The Frogs mind Aesop's Desiring A King: The Frogs were living happily in a swamp, caring for nobody and nobody troubling them. But some of them thought that was not right, that they should have a king and a proper So constitution. they Jove send to petitioned them a King to rule and to keep order. "Mighty Jove, they cried, "send unto us a King that will rule over us and help us keep order." Jove laughed and threw down into the swamp a huge Log, kersplash. The Frogs were frightened out of their lives by the commotion but after a time, seeing that it did not move, one or two of the boldest of them ventured out toward the Log. Then the greatest hero of the Frogs jumped and the Log upon commenced dancing up and down on it. Thereupon all the Frogs came and did the same. Soon the Frogs paid not the slightest notice to King Log. So they sent another petition to Jove asking for a real King, one that would really rule over them. This made Jove really angry so he sent them a Stork that soon set to work gobbling them all up. Then the Frogs repented but it was too late. FELLOW FROGS, better no rule than total rule CONSERVATIVE?
