The Utah signed a similar resolution during Washington (R-U- t) the last congress and today expressed concern that State Department negotiators have been flouting the Senates expression in their negotiations concerningjuris-dictio- n of the canal. Although most American shipping does not go through the Panama Canal, it retains important military significance, and could, under certain circumstances serve as a life line between east and west. As long as this is the case, we should never allow our control over the Canal and the Zone be diminished. Aside from the obvious strategic benefits the United States gains from Canal ownership we THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! will move this year, said President Carter in his Inaugural Address, a step toward our ultimate goal -We the elimination of all nuclear weapons from the earth. There are two ways to reach this goal. One is for all of the parties concerned to severely renounce nuclear weaponry, whether it be for offense or defense. The other is for one party to attain superiority, surround its adversaries, and either force them to surrender or blow them to bits and do then away with its nuclear arsenal. The odds are that, at the present time, the first way isnt going to work. To prevent the second scenario from taking place, the United States needs to keep peace through its own strength. For years the American people have been led to believe that all the Soviet Union wanted to do was to reach a parity with U.S. - nuclear capabilities. It is now clear that what the Russians want is definite superiority. Whether they have it yet is subject to a good deal of debate today. the CIA Each year, prepares an estimate of Soviet strategic objectives over the next ten years. The latest estimate is, in the words of one top military intelligence officer, and extremely grim. One of the reasons for its grimness is Major General George J. Keegan, Jr., who has just retired from the post of Air Force of Chief intelligence. somber Keegan has been criticizing our evaluations of what's happening in the U.S.S.R. for more than two decades. Finally, the U.S. intelligence community has started to IS CHARLIE listen to him. United States ownership of the Canal Zone benefits the nations of Central and South America more than it does us. Political considerations. however, often make it impossible for them to say so. I sincerely hope that the negotiating committee will seriously consider the sentiment expressed in this resolution during their final decision making process. A decision to relinquish the Panama Canal Zone would be an irretrievable mistake holding innumerable consequences. grossly underestimated that power. Ferguson E.R.A. PROPONENTS BLAME MORMONS The proposed Equal Rights Amendment recently suffered a major defeat when it was voted down by the Nevada state legislature. And while it is doubtful that any single group could claim credit for this defeat, E.R.A. proponents publicly put all the blame on the Mormon Church. And while the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints (Mormon) has repeatedly taken a strong position against the E.R.A., it is highly doubtful if the Church actually took any active part in this political action. Of course, it is probable that many members of the Mormon Church took active parts as individual citizens, along with other citizens. While blaming the Mormon Church, the defeated E.R.A. backers were noticeably bitter in their criticism. This is typical of an interesting phenomenon of modern-da- y politics. When any church or church leader publicly takes a conservative position on a political issue, the hysterical screams from the liberals is deafening and instantaneous. In these cases, the liberals scream that churches and church leaders should not involve themselves in matters of government. Their hypocrisy is immediately exposed when one recalls all of the church leaders who have publicly supported LIBERAL political issues. Lets see, without any mental strain whatsoever, several names come to mind. There was Reverend Martin Luther King, Reverend Ralph Abernathy, Father Grop-p- i, and Reverend Adam Gayton Powell, to name just a few. These public figures are known to have spent more of their time and efforts in political efforts than in saving the souls of their congregations. In fact, it appears that their title of Reverend was little more than a coverup for their political activities. And they invariably took the LIBERAL position on every issue. Now, the purpose of this article is not to criticize liberal church leaders for taking stands on political issues. But when the liberals condemn conservative church leaders for doing occasionally the same thing that the liberals do constantly, then someone needs to point out this hypocrisy. Rogers E.R.A. I 'ohaire The ostensible objective of the E.R.A. equal rights for women conveys a most laudible impression. But when it is analyzed to determine what it will actually do to relationships regarding marriage and the family, the real threat becomes evident. Consequently, it is obvious why the Mormon Church has taken a stand against the E.R.A. Furthermore, the Mormon Church and every other church is fully within its rights in taking a stand on a political issue which involves moral issues. In the future, when any liberal complains of a church leader taking a stand on a political issue, let us put them on notice not only of their own inconsistency, but of the moral right any church leader has to take a stand on any political issue, and particularly those involving moral issues. COMMUNISM CANNOT SURVIVE CRITICISM There must be a reason why Communist governments all consider criticism to be a most serious criminal offense. Most and concentration camps are of the inmates of the slave-labin there for having opinions considered critical of the Communist government. There must be reasons why Communist governments have such fear of criticism and go to such extremes to suppress and eliminate criticism and critics. Maybe the Communists realize that criticism would destroy their governments; realize that were their practices and failures exposed and broadcast by critics. Communist rule could not survive. Nothing less could explain their fanatical efforts against criticisms. Since those within the captive nations under Communism cannot be critical without ending up in prison camps, it becomes our duty to provide the expressed criticisms that can hasten the liberation of the captive nations and their captive people. We, each and all, must end the censorship that silences criticism. We should be most critical of those in politics and or |
