Show Page 10 The Utah Independent October 9, 1975 READERS time not giving away any precious American authority. information ' that we will use Minority Leader against the Sheriff, should this ever come to court. Besides the questionnaire, we would add that since the Tomato Field incident, we found that the Sheriff along with the Tracy Police Department, had held the minor traffic warrant which they refused to show at the field, since July 17, 197S, and this ticket was still under litigation in Turlock, Calif. Gillings said that a day never goes by, but what he comes incontact with officers of both mentioned, which departments makes one wonder about the Sheriffs real motives. Gillings said it sounds a little like the movie Walking Tall. On Monday, Sept. 15, 1975 the Gillings family received a call stating that the UFW would kill .Steven Gillings if the Posse continued to protect the Farmers fields and did not stop talking about the Farmers Property Rights. The Gillings family reported this to the Tracy P.D. and received little, if any, attention, at which time Steven was removed from school until they could decide what precautions to take. Gillings then called the Sheriffs dept, and was told that the Sheriff would not take a report from within the City of Tracy no matter w hat the situation, at which time Gillings, like the Farmers before them, were forced to turn to the local Posse Comitatus. which is looking into the matter. Mr. Perry of Perry Farms was also told by a caller that his property would be destroyed if he continued to fight the UFW. and since he had been refused help by the Sheriff before, he was forced to go to the expense of bringing all equipment in for protection every day and guard it himself. The most amazing thing of all this is that the newspapers refused to print anything about either incident, even to the threat on Steven Gillings' life. We feel the public deserves to know both sides of any issue, and unless they get it. reporting becomes mere editorializing which no free people can long afford. So please print both sides of any issue or dont print at all. The Posse never once raised a gun against the Sheriff, nor did we try to stop the UFW from organizing. We were there to stop unauthorized trespassing and this we did and did well. And whats more, we would have done the United Farm same for the Workers, had the issue been reversed. Francis E. Gillings Tracy, California 95376 NEW PANAMA TREATIES To the Editor: President Ford, while House minority leader on July 7, 1967, after reading the text of the The Paper That Dares To Take OUTLOOK Ford con- tinued his scathing denunciation of President Johnsons proposed treaties by saying, With Cuba under control of the Soviet Union via Castro an increased communist . subversion in Latin America, a communist threat to the canal is a He added: real danger. Certainly Congress has the responsibility to get more information than has been made available so far before accepting the Johnson Administration-sponsored treaties. Referring to a specific section of the defense treaty that provided confor United States-Panam- a sultation before the United States could move into certain sections of the Canal Zone for defense purposes. Ford said: Any action on our part to meet a threat involving the national security of the United States should not be hamstrung by the need for time consuming consultation with a government that might be reluctant to cooperate in the defense, or possibly be in opposition to our best interests. One week later on July 15, Tribune 1967, the Chicago published the complete text of three proposed treaties with Panama which involved serious of the existing undermining sovereign rights of the United States over the Canal Zone and canal itself, the publication of which caused such indignant furor throughout the United States that President never submitted the proposed treaties to the Senate for confirmation. pro-Sovi- et, control all international Senator Strom waterways? Thurmond and Congressman Daniel Flood are trying to retain our sovereignty over the Canal Zone to protect our economic and military positions and not, as you insinuate, to save a posh country club. Thorough research of the 1964 uprisings will reveal who, why, what was behind it. The United States cannot afford to be intimidated by left wing radicals andor communists nor rely on an old citizen, Ellsworth Bunker, or Henry Kissinger to make the decision on so vital an issue. This is for Congress to decide. In addition to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Veterans of Foreign Wars there are many other organizations including Women for Constitutional Government who, realizing the United States paid to construct, maintain, defend the canal and faithfully executed each and every term of the original treaties, advocate retaining sovereignty over the Panama Canal Zone because of economics and national security.
