Show ThePaper That Dares To Vake ! Stand A January 23, 1975 The Utah Independent Page S Who Controls The Schools? By John F. McManus Belmont, Massachusetts The battle over the content of school textbooks has spread to many parts of our country. Alerted by the widespread coverage given to the controversy in West Virginia, parents are taking a closer look at what is being given to their children. Such a development is long overdue. What raised the hackles of the West Virginians was the discovery that their childrens - schoolbooks contained selections written by drug addicts, Communists, perverts, racists, and revolutionaries. Various texts were actually laced with obscenities and blasphemies; hatred of white people; inducements to experiment with narcotics; downgrading of patriotism and religion, and glorification of immorality. Spokesmen for the nationally known textbook firms pointed out that their textbooks were written to comply with educational standards which had been suggested by federal agencies and then adopted by state boards of education. Frank Fox, president of the D.C. Heath Company, put his finger on the most significant element in the controversy when he said: The real gut issue is who controls the a schools. How right he is! Years ago, when there were no schools, education was parent-controlleLater, schools run by local governments came into being. Still later, state boards of education took over. And now, federal influence reigns supreme. The financing for all of these government-ru- n schools has, of course, been provided by the taxpayer, who, whether he agrees or disagrees with the concept or its implementation, has to pay the bill. When an individual pays for something, he has a right to assume that his funds will not be used to violate his rights or subvert his values. But what happens when two persons with opposite standards are forced to finance the same school? Whose standard will prevail? With government schools (generally called public schools) totally under local control, this although always a potential thorn problem was of minimal concern, because the standards tax-support- ed d. federal government into the field of education originally through seemingly innocuous school-lunc- h the problem has taken programs on national proportions, encompassing the widely divergent standards of a huge number of very different persons. A few years ago, an atheist complained about prayer and Bible reading in the government schools. She claimed that her son was being influenced against her wishes. The Supreme Court decided in her favor and threw prayer and Bible reading out of all government schools. The uproar over those decisions was quite intense, but unfortunately its aim was misdirected. What a difference there would be if support for government schools were voluntary, leaving parents the option and the ability to build and control their own privately run institutions. This, we believe, is the only way to proceed if the problems made evident by the West Virginia controversy are to be solved. Such a turnabout from the present government compulsion would, we feel certain, even induce publishers to produce textbooks that would gladden the heart of a rugged West Virginia mountaineer. flats, angles; and SQUARE TUBING BUYERS OF SCRAP IRON ts throughout the nation is the predictable outcome of government involvement where it never should exist in the classroom.
