About a year ago the property was closed down on account of the decrease in the price of copper and it was uot until a few months ago, when the South Utah Mines Co. secured control of the property, that operations were resumed. At the present time about sixty men are employed and preparations are being made for the resumption of full operations at an early date. During the ownership of this company considerable work was done and a water Jacket furnace was built which was a failure, economically. The Newhouae Mines and Smelters corporation the bought property in 1900, obtaining 6,000 acres of land besides the original mining claim!. This company carried on extensive operations for a few years and succeed'd in opening up several large bodies of ore. A shaft is down 850 teet while a tunnel haa been driven, to cut the fissure, a distance of 6500 feet. Two glory holes are situated at the bottom of Copper Gulch near the old shaft which was sunk by the French company. Besides these there are numerous shafts, drifts, crosscuts, etc. which makes the underground workings a complete network. No mine in the district, or in fact Beaver County, is so well equipped for heavy mining aa the Cactus, and the tact that 'the ore ia a low grade copper, and prices for thia metal are o low at this time, is all that keeps the owners from starting full operations at once.
