Bookmobiles could be seen lumbering along Ihe streets making the chance to smell that smell that only library hooks can produce, simpler Note, and with children ot your own. you journey into the library Almost excited by the fact that everybody knows you must be silent in the library, and you will have time to peruse (in the library you can use those bigger words) the aisles in search ot the most perfect novel, biographv. or how to book After going in the door a bizarre situation confronts you Instead of a kindlv face ot a sweet librarian, who knows your middle name, that your dog needs his shots at the vet and the fact that you were the one who got her braces stuck on a fork in third grade, belore you looms a computer screen complete with flashing thing, a mouse, and pentel inside, (whatever that means ) One of your children scampers off to sit at a table just her sie Her small eyes aglow at the wonder of books And your teen goes in search of an article on America's biggest balls of twine, fact or fiction, needed for a research paper left to your own devices you gather your courage and nonchalantly wander over to the Dewy Decimal system a la contusion It tcxik years to learn how to use those tinv cards, now you must learn how to lind your book via cyberspace You will just ask, after all everyone had to learn sometime Sidling up to one of those electronic beast-leyou open your mouth to ask Oh great, the person ( ) at the keyboard is young, in fact you have socks older than he Stunned by the sight of a mere child, on a stool no less, plunking on the keys and reading what the computer spits out, you casually look over the youth's shoulder, which is the easy part Debating whether you could tell the little computer guru to slow down, you wish you had brought a small tape recorder so you could covertly whisper into it, "Use keys with the arrows to move the flashs, ing thing around, then push the enter key etc, etc But since you have to memorize the steps you find yourself trying to set it to some sort of rhyme to help you remember "The little black blinking thing, sits on the screen there, move it with arrowed keys Then using your thumb, great now you look dumb Won't somebody help me please9 OK, so that isnt going to work, in the end you decide to just go up and down the aisle, looking at the titles until a something looks good By this time your two children have their armload of books (How did they find them so fast9) and are ignoring the quiet plextse, policy, and demanding it is dinner time You make a grab for the closest books You don t want to leave the library with nothing to show tor all your work and admit defeat Proud to, at least, look like you know what you are doing you oin vour line children in the check-ou- t While waiting, you notice you have picked three books. Fun with Soap, You Can Make Soap at Home, and Soap Carving, the Lost Art Afraid to lose your place in line you tell yourself not to worry you will just use the books as door stops until they are due You wait patiently in the line and realize the little pipsqueak you saw earlier on the computer has 10 books clutched in his youthful arms Almost afraid you look at one ol the titles, at that angle you are almost certain that the title is War and Peace Na Probably a storybook on how the Three Little Pigs made friends with the big bad woll You finally reach the desk and you and your children plunk down the books You explain hurriedly, before anyone can question your choice of literature that your husband asked you to pick these up tor some sort of top secret invention that his company is working on The library worker (it's probably politically incorrect to call them a librarian, gives you a, "Ya right" look and asks for your card You explain to hint that you don't have one yet. His mouth drops open as he politely doesn't refer to the fact that someone your age had YEARS to get a card He points over his shoulder to yet another line You glance at your kids, the teen is hiding behind a poster ot Barney, mortified that anyone should recognize you as his mother You usher your youngest over to that line, muttering in a voice a few decibels above the quiet please that there should be a sign for chil dren so they don't get confused, and wait again By now you have your teen's books, he is talking to some friends down aisle B and your youngest's books She looks like a waif and sits on the floor crying for dinner The line there is longer and your arms are tired You convince yourself that this will definitely count as your half hour of exercise for today and to the chagrin of the people behind you in line shuffling their feet you not so gracefully plop all the books down on the nearest table Utterly empty-hande- d you corral your children and quietly d bribe them with pizza for dinner Walking out the f Wi ' -
