Girls who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the Girl Scout experience girls in homeless shelters and migrant labor and girls from camps, for example other under-serve- d population groups are beneficiaries of this traditional fundraising event. There are 331 Girl Scout councils in the United States and each one manages their own cookie sale program. Only two bakeries are sanctioned by Girl Scouts of the USA to bake Girl Scout cookies. Cookies sold in Utah are baked in Louisville, Kentucky. Many people outside of Girl Scouting have questions about the cookie sale program. Its important for us to emphasize that this is a seasonal program activity in which girls voluntarily participate for approximately two weeks a year, and that the revenues from the sale benefit girls directly and indirectly. Girl Scouts in our council jurisdiction benefit in many ways because of our successfuT'cookie sale program. We manage for the mission to inspire girls with the high- girls who sold cookies and an additional $25,000 in financial assistance. The true value of the cookie sale program rests on what it does for girls. From participation in the the important support services professional staff provides. In 1997, the projected cookie figures show that of the $3 per box, 25.9 percent will go to Little Brownie Bakers for the cookies themselves. About 51.3 percent will be used for program development, facility maintenance, training, and support services for girls. Some 10 percent per box goes directly to the Girl Scout troop treasury so girls can carry out their own program plans, field trips, and other adventures that enhance their Girl Scout experience. Another 7.3 percent will be issued in the form of activity credits given directly to girls who participate in the cookie sale program. Girls use cookie credits for d camps, program events, and select merchandise in the Girl Scout Shop. Only 5.5 percent is used to administer the cookie sale, girls often receive their first practical education in finance, marketing, and communications. They are given an active part in helping to support their organization. But, most importantly, they benefit from taking part in an organization just for girls; one that offers them vital guidance on their way to adulthood. As we work toward diversifying our council funding, we have reasons to be grateful to the Girl Scout cookie sale program. Girl Scouts have been selling cookies for more than 60 years providing a values-base- d organization for millions and millions to enjoy. She had a good point. Interpersonal communication is, unfortunately, an inexact science. Its impossible to know how our words and actions are going to be even those interpreted by others closest to us. As a result, we occasionally find ourselves in awkward situations where what we say or do comes back at us from surprising and angles perspectives. Sometimes the misunderstanding is in our favor, and sometimes it works against us. Either way, clearing up those misconceptions becomes a matter of honor and personal integrity. For Amy, that meant being willing to put at risk a friendship that had come to mean a great deal to her. I can't let him go on thinking that our relationship means the same thing to me that it means to him, she said, sadly. That would be like writing a check that I know 1 cant cash. It wouldnt be right.
