This is the cue that her 19lh century costume drama will not be a Merchantlvory clone or a continued tribute to Austen mania. The Portrait of a Lady" is the classic novel by American Henry James, who writes in a weighty prose. Dont expect any wild carriage chases or heroic duels over virtues. This is slow permeating drama. Ill a literary critique. William H. Gass describes James's novel as his "first fully exposed ease of human manipulation; of what it means to be a consumer of persons and what it means to be a person consumed." The "consumed" in this ease is Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman), an American girl abroad hoping to experience Furope The consumer! s aie the misogy rustic Gilbert Osmond (John Maikov ich) and the ambivalent Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey ). Campion's cine- The Preacher's Wife (PG) matographer from the beautiful "Piano" again gels the visuals right. The story is intriguing enough, hut crucial plot conceits including the character development of Isabel are weak and disintegrate the heart of the piece. Kidman is certainly beaulilul, hut the screen play keeps telling us she is dazzling rather than showing us more than a nice fashion sense. We have to guess at all of the promise in Isabel that is supposedly squelched by her marriage to Osmond. And how can we believe that the elusive Isabel tan be ensnared by the caitiff, slimy Osmond as played by Maikov ich. The role of Osmond is too much like Maikov ichs role in "Dangerous Dalmations (G) 12 10 2 35 4 50 7 00 9 35 Turbulence (R) 00 3 10 5 20 7 30 9 40 Jerry Maguire (R) 45 4 30 7 15, 10 00 Beverly Hills Ninja 1 (PG-13- ) 00 3 00 5 00 7 00 9 00 The Relic (R) 12 20 2 45 5 05 7 25 9 45 The Last Resort 1 (PG-13- ) 30 3 30 5 30 7 30 9 30 Metro (R) 45 4 40 7 10 9 40 miev NORTH 1000 N 500 Salt Lake E,N Liaisons" but without the great moments and writing that made the other role riveting. Barbara Hershey is a stand out in her role as Madame Merle. Every scene she touches is electrified.
