They seem to find new and not so exciting ways to lose. Just consider losses last week in Toronto and Detroit. Thursday they scored 96 points and lost by 14. Not too bad on offense, weak defense. Saturday night they come back with defense, giving up less than 90 points, and lose by 10 while putting just 77 points on the board. Sometimes they lose on turnovers, sometimes its giving up rebounds. This team, noted for its consistency, is doing nothing with consistency recently except losing. The Jazz had lost eight consecutive road games going into Philadelphia Monday night. 77-7- Saturday, Jan. 11 Detroit Pistons 87, Jazz 77 Grant Hill is leading the Eastern Conference players in I votes. He earned the Jazz vote Saturday. Hill scored 19 points (tied for tops on the team), grabbed 11 rebounds (tied for tops on the team), dished out a team high All-S- tar seven assists and sold popcorn TU during the time outs (just kidding) in leading the Pistons over Utah. Detroit outscored Utah 27-- 19 in the first quarter and then 16-- 11 in the second to build up a comfortable 13 point halftime lead which they never relinquished. The Jazz rallied in the second half to pull within seven points, but Detroit hit nine three point shots in the game (compared to just three by the Jazz), and got the big long shots late in the contest to hold the visitors off. " h A The Pistons had lost nine straight games to the Jazz before Saturdays win. Utah is now 10 since having its 15 game win streak stopped by Phoenix, Dec. 12. With the loss, Utahs frustration continued to boil, as evidenced by a third quarter technical foul assessed to Jazz coach Jerry Sloan who got in an argument with referee Bennie Adams. Reuben Nembhard, who signed to a 10 dty contract last week to take the roster spot of injured rookie Shandon Anderson, logged six minutes of play against the Pistons and hit one of three field goal attempts to finish with two points. Thursday, Jan. 9 Toronto Raptors 110, azz 96 The Jazz had positioned themselves to perhaps win a road game in Toronto. With six and a half minutes to go, the game was tied and the Jazz had a chance. But second year guard Damon Stoudamire scored 17 of his team high 27 points in the fourth period and the Raptors outscored the Jazz 20-- 6 with the game on the line to win comfortably. Toronto Utah by 10, 8, and hit on 63 percent of its three point shot attempts to win its 1th game of the season. Particularly effective was the fourth quarter 38-2- 1 performance of the home team which hit 13 of 19 field goal attempts and grabbed eight more rebounds in the quarter. The Raptors led by one at halftime, and trailed by a point going into the final frame, but the Jazz managed just 18 points in the fourth period while giving up 33 to lose. It was the first time the Jazz had lost to the Raptors in the brief history of the Toronto franchise. Five Raptor players scored in double figures with Stoudamire and Doug Christie (22 points) leading the way. Both teams shot 50 percent or better from the Field, but Toronto got four more shots from the Field and hit 12 of 19 from behind the three point arc.
