Show page A4 Tuesday, January 7, 1997 Davis County Clipper m our opinion THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE-.- Pirates not the only politically incorrect thing at Disneyland A move has finally been taken to gel America back on firm moral ground. Thanks to the lobbying of some 'sensitive guests at Disneyland, the bawdy Pirates of the Caribbean will be tamed and history w ill be rewritten. No longer will the pirates chase after the skirts of the village maidens the way you remember it from history class. With a complete revamping, gluttony will replace lust on the ride as the maidens will be carrying trays of turkey and wine. The object of their chase will be food in the future. One Disney land spokesman said Were sensitive to issues that might be politically incorrect. Well if thats true the entire park needs to be shut "down. There is no way Disneyland can stamp out all of the problems it has and remain a viable family entertainment kingdom. Lets take a look at the facts. How can we justify the blatant disregard and of those with handicaps? Dumbo's ears are subject to ridicule when he should be labeled as Pinocchios nose is the brunt of many jokes. And how about showing some sensitivity to the slow learners. Goofy! What a name for a slow learner. Goofy should rebel. Gawrsh, I dont think 1 like that anymore. Nope, nope don't like it. Yup, yup, its gotta change, he was heard to say. They're just characters you say. Well what about Captain Hook? He has only one hand and nobody is sending him disability payments! Getting back to challenges, should we really label the stepsisters in Cinderella as ugly? Of course not. They are appearance challenged, just as the seven Dwarfs are vertically challenged. And speaking of the Dwarfs, should we really have a young girl living with seven old men? Think about it. And ladies there are tons of things wrong with Disneyland when it comes to womens lib. Have you ever heard of Minnie Mouse or Daisy Duck going to the office? Are they moving up the corporate ladder or are they going to be stuck in their stereotyped roles of the girlfriends for the rest of their pathetic little lives? Its time for a change. They dont even drive! As for the wicked step mothers that dot Disney stories, has anyone checked to see if they were abused as children? Surely they arent intrinsically wicked. With help from the courts they could be cured. And where is the ASPCA when you need them? Havent they seen those bears being trained to play banjos? How about birds in the Enchanted Tiki Room? Cant they see that is blatant commercialism? Why do we allow hippos to be shot every time a boat passes by on the Jungle Cruise? Arent they an endangered species? And while were on the subject of animals could Donald Duck please put some pants on! This is a family AIR POLLUTION . WERE GOING TO KAYE TO N0I APD SOME REGULATIONS- !- fun-maki- auriclely-challenge- d. park. Violence is rampant at Disneyland. Your first introduction to the Haunted Mansion involves seeing the remains of a suicide victim who has been driven mad by the ghosts in the mansion. In just that one second event they encourage violence and violate the civil rights of the mentally ill. Have you ever seen anything as politically incorrect as Its A Small World. There they all are, the children of the world sticking to their own language, their own native dress, embracing their own culture. Were supposed to be a melting pot. The ride encourages racism and separation. Another thing, where were the environmentalists when the huge tunnels were driven through Thunder Mountain to accommodate a railroad? That can't be environmentally 'safe. And has anyone seen the burning settlers cabin? We wont even go there. No, there is no choice but to shut the entire park down. Who knows what kind of evil influence this den of iniquity has had on America's morals? Forget the family album, forget the fact you thought you were having fun. You weren't. The extremists know whats best for you and they will have their way. Just ask the pirates. K hushed semi weekly by Clipper Publishing Co., Inc. And despite your bleatings about how a gas tax increase is unnecessary, it's impossible to make S2.6 billion in cuts without demolishing the public education and higher education systems. Yes, a gas tax increase is inconvenient but it's also a Utah's current fuel tax is not necessarily high, ranking 25th among the 50 states, and when adjusted for inflation, the current cost of gasoline in Utah is less than it was 30 years ago. And it's silly for these men to brand Utah as a tax hell. On a basis, 41 states have higher state and local tax collecer tions than Utah's and our taxes would even be lower if we didn't have an abnormally large number of children to educate. Thankfully, the rantings of Bresnahan, Hunter and Bradford are more than offset by the quiet and thoughtful wisdom of those who understand the coming transportation challenges. The leading legislative expert on transportation, Rep. Marda Dillree, responded to the press conference tirade by saying, It's really quite simple. Should someone have the curiosity and courage to find the genesis of these new involuntary contributions to a supposedly cleaner environment one would trace them back through the federal EPA and beyond to the United Nations and its peripheral think tank organizations. Nice people they are, making a living deciding how you will live your life to more of a degree than you probably can imagine. So you think you can fight them. Well of course, you will call your attorney and file a lawsuit. Definitely this will call off the And certainly writing letters to all your elected public officials is sure to bring relief. Or for the very determined, when you have to go down to the central emission testing center and those long lines, take the plates off your vehicle and toss them at the clerk there telling him and the government to go to. ..Just see how far you get down the road before you go to jail. Despite those glorious claims of democracy the hard reality is that we are more or less just serfs to world government order with a few having enough money and power among peers to laugh at the rules us sheep must obey. The article describes fires in two Maple Hills homes, one of which was a log home in which the fire began with an open candle catching some curtains on fire. It goes on to explain that the log home had no sprinkling system, large open spaces, a long steep narrow driveway that prevented access by fire vehicles, etc. We moved to Bountiful more than 40 years ago and bought a home that was situated down in the valley below many developed homes above us. It was easily accessible to the bus line, grocery stores, fire department, resented us moving snow removal equipment, etc. I guess the into their quiet solitude, much as we resent the hoity-toit- y who have in recent years built ostentatious homes in the hills above Bountiful. In so doing they have: (1) despoiled our once beautiful view of the hills and mountains, (2) usurped the services the city used to give us such as prompt snow removal, (3) subjected their homes to certain destruction by wild fires in the foothill oak brush, (4) subjected their property to flooding by natural storms following the fire disasters, and (5) now want to increase our taxes so they can have the kinds of services and protection they feel they are entitled It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that burning a candle by a curtain in a log home is not the most brilliant thing to do. Likewise, building a home far from the source of services and protection in the oak brush hills is inviting disaster. I feel that the likelihood of wild fires followed by flooding are not an "if hut when certainty, to say nothing of earthquake probabilities along the frontal fault. Those who find themselves in this position must be responsible for the choices they have made! I certainly sympathize with those who have lost their homes, but I don't feel responsible for their losses enough to increase my taxes just for their benefit. Ed. D. Cox Bountiful should change from city manager to city commission Editor, Before any more boondoggles take place in our fair city, perhaps it may manager government. It is believed the elected officials of our municipality are doing the best they can under the circumstances, but this writer remembers studying this recommended form of local government during the years 2 at BYU when Dr. Stewart Grow was airing the city manager part of our present form of administration. The late professor Grow was the man who influenced Calvin Ramptons election to the governors office. He also held that a city should be run as a business. It turns out that many areas jumped on the bandwagon and began doing just that. As a definite conservative, it is my opinion that the good doctor, though meaning well, and a liberal, missed the point. Government should be, it is sure readers will agree, by the people, and for the people, and have the authority to act as the people wish who put them there. Citizens of the city are not economic entities as the socialists would suggest, but needful of the benefits the largess realized from the taxpayer for each ones good, and not to build up an account through investments of taxes and incomes from captive customers through franchises on utilities, sales of annexed real estate, and even more income from the annexed parcels of land. It is doubtful if the city council knows of all the incomes and disbursements of the city manager, except as it reported, and perhaps handled under completely legal counsel. The city council no doubt but either yea or may, not having had the time during their busy day to know what it is all about. Three of the unneeded projects by those responsible are the sale of downtown property to the post service for less than it cost, with local taxpayers to make up the difference. Another is the placement of concrete benches on Main Street which no one wants or has time to use. Then done not only for commercial interests, but all beautiful Bountiful. And three are others like non-ta- x paying Woods Cross who have a water storage property on 2600 South, without permission of residents. Let's change our city government to responsible commission type where they can be subject to the people, not at the digression of a business city manager. just be appropriate to publicize the origin of mayor-council-ci- ty 1949-195- W.
