Show page C6 Tuesday, December 31, 1 Davis County Clipper 996 First Japanese Buddhists in County worshipped in Syracuse Doneta Gatherum Contributing Writer The need for a Buddhist Church lo sere the Japanese families living in Davis Count) during the 1920s was fulfilled April 26, 1925 when the Syraeuse Buddhist Church opened tor the first time This sturdy white frame building was located about one-hamile north of the Syracuse Elementary School on property owned by John R Barnes It was simple in design, consisting ol one large hall with a stage at one end and a foyer at the other The stage was raised and had a beautiful purple curtain with a emblem large chrysanthemum painted on it many Beginning in 1917, Japanese families moved into Davis County to work for local farmers as sharecroppers or to rent from land owners like Barnes who had many acres of land but were not aimers Many were first generation immigrants who wanted their children to retain a portion of the Japanese culture At first the church was part of the Salt Lake Buddhist group As the lf 1 years passed, the people became affiliated with the Ogden Buddhist Church The Buddhist religious leaders from Ogden traveled throughout northern I tah and into southern Idaho to hold serv ices with scattered small congregations among the tanning communities The Syracuse congiegation was never large, numbering only 117 at its peak The church was the cetuei ol a wide variety of religious social and educational activities including weddings, funerals.
