It's true that many foods also have medicinal uses, but the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 blurs the line between food supplements and what most people consider drugs Drugs are tested and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For a drug to be approved it must be proved both sale and effective at the recommended dose. Dietary supplements aren't even required to prove purity or to provide information documenting exactly what's in the bottle. Even though they are labeled "food supplements" it is obvious that they are being taken as drugs. Just take a walk through any health food store or read any one ot the dozens of alternative health magazines and you'll see all sorts of claims for baldness, high blood pressure, fatigue, arthritis and obesity cures associated with unregulated food supplements, says Roger Coulombe, professor of toxicology at Utah State University. This has put up the caveat-empt(buyer beware) sign for consumers, Coulombe says. Reclassifying a product from a drug to a focxl supplement takes most of the regulatory teeth out of the FDA It is now relegated to being an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff rather than a fence at the top. Rather than testing a product before it goes on the market, the FDA must now prove that a product is unsafe before it can require a warning label on the product or remove it from the market. So in essence the public is used as guinea pigs to see if the product is dangerous," Coulombe says, adding that most food supplements are fairly benign and some are even useful. Some can be harmful even if taken in rather small doses. Vitamin A, for instance, has been associated with birth defects, but can be purchased at nearly any store as a food supplement carrying little or no warning about this. Tea made from both chap- a natural high, is on file at the FDA as causing 330 adverse reactions and is associated with a dozen deaths. Most food supplements jusl4out such vagaries as promotes energy" or strengthens immune system, he says. These products are not required to prove "efficacy." That is, they don't have to prove that they actually do what they promise to do. Even over the counter drugs such as cold remedies and eye drops have to prove their claims, Coulombe says. He says comfrey tea is a good example of a dangerous food supplement Research has shown that it can cause severe and sometimes fatal liver damage. It can also cause liver cirrhosis (scarring) similar to chronic alcohol consumption. Consequently, the sale of comfrey has been restricted in Australia, Great Britain, present Families in Action" for parents and youth ages Classes beginning Jan. 6 at 6.30 p.m. at the Davis Mental Health, 470 E.
