Show Davis County Clipper Tuesday, December 24, 1996 page B1 Powerful P.G. prevails at Viewmont Tourney Tony Bake Sports Writer BOUNTIFUL As the Braves, Vikings and Darts suited up Friday afternoon, they knew it would not be an easy trip. The Viewmont Tournament pits the top teams in the state against each other in a tournament that rivals the state tournament, and surpasses the region tournament. With powerhouses such as nationally ranked Wasatch Wasps and 4As best squad in Pleasant Grove, the road to victory would be bumpy and narrow. But some of our area's top wrestlers took to that challenge and placed in one of the most difficult tournaments they'll see this year. One of the key matchups even had the added bonus of seeing a future Region 2 title match, such as the Drew Ballard ) vs. Richie Oborn (7-match. When Obom and Ballard met the second day of the tournament, it was huge, this was for 3rd and 4th place, the difterence between ending the tournament with a win or loss. Right off the bat, Oborn came out very aggressive, he worked his moves to perfection and took a five point lead with a sin (6-2- takedown and cradle near fall. Ballard fought hard though and the match ended in a major decision for Oborn, 13-Another key matchup was Jon Giatrus (7-of against Brian Blain (14-0- ) Pleasant Grove. After fighting his way to the championships, Giatrus pitted against 3X state champion, Brian Blain, one of the top wrestlers in the state this year. Right at the beginning of the match you could tell that Jon was going to give it his all and challenge this state champ. Going into the third round the score was 2 and Giatrus was looking extremely tough when all of gle-le- g 3. 3-- the sudden Blain set up a stack and the match was over with a fall. This was by far the toughest match for Blain this far into the season.
