Show page Davis County Clipper A2 Tuesday, December 24, 1996 Continued from front Pastor Pat Edwards Graie Baptist Cliuuh One ot the wavs our congregation celebrates the birth ot Jesus Christ is bv using the Adent W reath In ea.h sen ice tor tour Sundays before Christmas, members light the appropriate candles, read relevant scripture and explain that the Advent season is a time to spiritually prepare for celebrating the coming of God the Son to the world The four candles that are successively lit each Sunday can symbolize a variety ot things so this year I looked for a tresh interpretation One source that provided me with new symbolism stated that each candle symbolized one of the comings of Jesus to mankind The first candle stands tor his incarnation, when the Word became flesh To incarnate means to take on flesh and God the Son did that in the little town of Bethlehem - His first coming The angel answered. The Holy Spirit will come upon you. and the power of the Most High will ovei shadow you So the holy one to be bom will be called the Son ot God Luke 35 The second candle stands tor his spiritual coming into our lives This is a personal act which involves an invitation rooted in faith The scriptuie tells us time and time again that even though God the Son lived among us not everyone accepted that fact. There wete many who reiected hint His tirst coming was something beyond our control but his second coming to us as individuals is the result ol our personal invitation to him to enter our lives as Savior and Lord He was in the world and though the world was made through him, the world 1 1 Jesus will come and establish his eternal we think or do. kingdom regardless of what In our Advent sequence this is the fourth to his earlier coming and our response our response to this determine will comings final coming. Do we look forward to his return in power and glory with the same joy that we celebrate his birth? Does the throne inspire the same feelings as the manger? If Gods plan has been fulfilled in our lives, if Jesus is more than a baby for a few weeks each year but is Savior and Lord everyday of the year then Christmas creates a profound joy that knows no season and husband that she lives now with her Savior. Another woman in her forties died of kidney failure but her children live with the hope of being with her again because Christ was born. Another woman also in her forties was murdered by her husband but her brother and other family members have assurance she is now in the presence of Jesus. In each case death is overcome by life as Jesus welcomes these believers into did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed m his name, he gave the right to become children ot God .. John The third candle of the Advent Wreath symbolizes the Lord Jesus coming to believers at the moment of t' eir death. Because of the emphasis on the birth of Jesus and our desire to focus on birth and life death seems out of place at this time of year But its Christmas that begins the story of hope; the Word became flesh and lived among us and eventually took our penalty upon himself when he went to the cross. In the last month three families in our congregation have been reminded of this w'oman died of great truth A 41 year-old heart disease but Christmas reminds her 10-1- 2 his presence. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 1 Thess 5. 0 The fourth and final candle symbolizes what most believers refer to as the Second Coming when Christ returns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Like the first coming, this coming is out of our control. -- no end.
