Show Daws County Clipper Friday, August 9, 1996 page 23 Hike to get ready to hunt Hunting season is rapidly approaching and it is time to get in shape. Jogging around the blix'k v ill spectacular views of Utah County and the surrounding areas. It may also provide vou with a climpse of a mountain goat, as you traverse the mountain's slopes. American Fork Canyon is steep and rugged, hut it ux has some nice hiking areas. It you don't nnnd packing a fishing rod. drive to Silver Lake Flat, which is above Tibbie Fork Reservoir, park your car and hike up the mountain to Silver Lake. This lake can be fun to v isit and to fish. If you start on the north side of the Utah Outdoors by Mike Hemingway get you started, but one of the best ways to get your muscles ready for the mountains is to hike. Fortunately, mountain, in Little Cottonwood Canyon, you can hike to Red Pine and V hue Pine Lakes. The trails start just above Tanner Flat near the White Pme Campground and head up the mountain. These hikes are favorites among boy scouts, but if you go in the middle of the week, you should have the lakes to yourself. I made the hike to Red Pine Lake one August afternoon and ended up fishing with the only bait I could find, a piece of a bologna sandwich. In spite of the scoffs of my hiking partner. the bait worked, and I caught there are lots of places to hike this time of the year, so tie on your hiking boots, strap on your canteen, pack your lunch in a fanny pack and head for the hills. Some hikes w ill take you to magnificent scenery. Others will lead you off the beaten path to good fishing. If you are preparing for the hunt, a scouting trip combined with a hike can really get you ready for the coming season. One of my favorite hikes is to the top of Mount Timpanogas, but the hike is not for the faint hearted or the out of shape. The trails to the peak start at Timpooneke Campground or at Aspen Grove. The Aspen Grove side is shorter and steeper, but either way provides a heavy duty workout. The Timpanogas hike provides fish. Farther north, near Bountiful, there is a good hiking trail that runs from North Canyon to Mueller Park. This trail is often used by mountain bikers, but can also be enjoyed on foot. For the adventurous, hiking does- - n't require a well tiaveled trail. In fact, if you are doing some scouting for the hunt, you want to get off the beaten path. Start at the mouth of any of the Wasatch Front cany ons. and you will find trails that will lead you upward. Some trails are made by people and others by game animals, but they can be easily traveled. When you go hiking, be sure to take plenty of water. The streams may look inviting, but most contain giardia. which will make you sick enough that you will never want to hike again. Wear a hat. sunscreen, and good fitting hiking boots. And don't forget to tell someone where you are going so you can be rescued if you get lost. Hiking is a lot of fun. It will help you see new country, find big game, explore new fishing holes, and get you into shape. So go take a hike.
