George is hard pressed when asked if he has a favorite place to take pictures. I feel at home w herever it is that Im photographing, when theres something about the place that moves me. He cites against the lush green of the describes his love of photography more succinctly. Its a passion, he says, laughing. Georges work has appeared in the calendar since the 1970s. This year finds nearly fifty of his photographs in thirty-fiv- e different calendars, and he is currently collaborating on a book on the Great Salt Lake, with local author Ellen Sorenson. physicist for Alliant Techsystems, George finds his A love and his work, Blend well together. Its a freedom from the confinements of my job. He feels that to be good, photography has to come from the heart. It cant be by rules. If John George has a favorite photograph in the calendar, it is his image of the gates of Temple Square, the temple softly illuminated against the steel gray of a winter sky. 1 wanted to photograph it, he said. I saw the potential for capturing it in the evening. The image was created on a snowy day, just after a storm. Equally spectacular are his sunset shots of the Great Salt Lake, the warm light of days end playing upon the water, and the bril ventures to Arizonas Sonora Desert, moments photographing the Great Salt Lake, and standing in the tall prairie grass of South Dakotas badlands. I felt like I was a part of the landscape in all those places, he said. I felt like I was home. In its centennial calendar, the Utah Travel Council presents the varied beauty of Utah, past and present, in images and historic sidebars words fall short of describing. Perhaps its best description is the rapidity with which it disappears from bookstores such as Sandy Malis Deseret Book, where clerk Doree Despain says, by Christmas, its gone. The calendar is a tribute both to the majesty of Utah and the talents of its residents, one of those things of beauty which, in the words of THE SANDSTONE OF SOUTHERN UTAH Sandy's Jerry Sintz got this colorful picture of the historic Bluff cemetery for the Utah Travel Council's 1996 calendar. Sintz contributed four of the calendar's photos. before it vanishes.
