The object of the competition was to design, engin neer and fabricate a vehicle, capable of not but of great speed, achieving a very high mileage using a Briggs & Stratton three hp engine. Students Chris Cammack, Ben Gwilliam, Bryant Haag, Bryan Jones, Eric Olsen, Jeremy Paget, and instructor Val Heiner constructed a vehicle of stainless steel tubing, several old bicycle parts, and an old lawn chair. The approximate weight of the car was 75 pounds. Students analyzed different designs and decided on a three wheel, rear wheel drive, tricycle design. The drive train was calculated and recalculated to obtain optimum performance and mileage. All components were designed and machined by the students in ihe class. Most of the materials were obtained from THREE GENERATIONS sal- vage. The contest included 36 entries from all around Utah, including colleges, technology centers and high schools. All vehicles were inspected for safety, including brakes, mirrors, fire extinguisher, stability and driveability. They also checked for modified or illegal engines (all cars ran on a stock engine). AT OAK HILLS: Not often do grandmother, and daughter, granddaughter attend the same elementary school at the same time. This happened this past school year as Mattie Kay Jessee attended Kindergarten at Oak Hills Elementary, while next door in the school her mother, Kayla Bigler taught a first grade class. Mattie's grandmother, Kay Bigler taught another first grade class in the next room. The three are shown wearing their "30 years of excellence" shirts and had their picture taken together. Next year, Mattie is enrolled at Reading 'Elementary as her family has moved to Farmington. The three generations will not be together in school at Oak Hill Elementary. The competition consisted of driving five laps around a one mile course on sidewalks, parking lots and roads of the campus. Only three cars were allowed on the course at one time. Some cars never completed the course due to mechanical and structural failures. Viewmont s driver Eric Olsen piloted the car to a second place finish, with a mileage of 171.05 miles per gallon, surpassing all colleges, ATCs and last years first place mileage of 155 miles per gallon.
