Teach children basic precautions and dangers Safety urged with garage door openers Although its often the largest and heaviest piece of moving equipment in a home, many parents dont realize the potentially deadly consequences of allowing young children, who havent been taught basic safety precautions, to use the automatic garage door operator. When parents make the decision that their kids are old enough to cross the street alone, they teach them basic safety rules including looking both ways for cars and crossing the street only at comers, says Jim Beyreis, vice president for chief and engineer Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). Parents need to make the same type of decision and have the same sort of discussion with their kids about using the garage door operator safely. Garage doors weigh as much as 500 pounds and can cause serious injury or even death if theyre not used properly, Beyreis explains. "Parents need to supervise and train their kids how to use the door safely. This includes teaching kids that they shouldnt activate the operator unless theyre absolutely certain that nothing is in the doors path. Children also need to know that its dangerous to activate the door and try to run or ride a bike under neath it before it closes. Parents should set a good example and not try to beat the door themselves, stresses Beyreis. Although it seems like a fast and fun way out of the house, its a deadly race to lose. Parents with children who are too young to understand garage door safety can help prevent at tragedy by making sure controls are installed out of the kids teach and portable transmitters are kept out of their hands, he says. UL Listed residential garage door operators manufactured since 1982 are equipped with anti wall-mount- ed entrapment features, including a safety feature that causes the door to stop and reverse within two seconds after striking an object. For further protection, UL Listed residential garage door operators manufactured since Jan. 1, 1993, are provided with an additional antientrapment feature such as a photoelectric eye or an edge switch. Although UL Listed residential garage door operators manufactured since the beginning of 1993 will have enhanced safety features, homeowners shouldn't take safety for granted, says Beyreis. They need to test and inspect the door monthly. To test the operator's antientrapment feature, place a one and one-hainch object, such as a two-b- y four lumber, flat of piece on the floor in the path of the open door. Activate the door to close. If the door doesn't stop and reverse after contact with the object, disconnect the operator and use the door manually until the operator is replaced or repaired by a qualified lf technician. The doors springs, rollers and other hardware should be visually inspected for signs of wear or breakage. If there is any evidence of wear or deterioration, contact a qualified technician for repair. |
