ROCKY FRIENDS DAYS OVES- - OF AND ABC INEWS CBS NEWS his vow to turn things around, both in his personal life and his career. This, plus his recent awards for Country Male Vocalist Of The Year and Single Of The Year for 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' are helping George to become the 'new' George Jones he hopes to be. Since his recent CMA awards, the sale of George Jones albums has tripled. While his recent Epic LPs seem to keep up with the demand, there is a shortage of Georges earlier recordings from his Starday Records days. And in answer to the many readers who have asked about Jones early recordings, three of his first album offerings, George Jones Greatest Hits, George Jones' Golden Hits and Crown Prince of Country. Music, are available for $17.50 in album, eight-trac- k and cassette from Golden Oak Music, P.0. Box 2112, Asheville, North Carolina 28802. Don Williams does it again with his 'I Believe In You' LP for MCA Records. Williams, whose voice has been called 'gentle thunder,' keeps doing the same thing, time after time, of sliding over lyrics and phrases like tracks on pavement, but still makes presentation something special. Steve Flash By K. Walz Gordon' Dino De Laurentiis track record has not been good as of late, having forced his banana of a remake, King Kong, upon movie going audiences all over the world. And when it was announced that he would spend lots of bucks on developing the Flash Gordon' comic strip hero with a total unknown in the lead role (Sam Jones), the snickers were heard from coast to coast. REVIEW Well, 'Flash' is here, and to my surprise Dino has come up with a marvelous piece of science-farce- , borrowing from many other successful sci-f- i screen epics without blatantly ripping them off. Gordon is a star quarterback for the New York Jets who boards an airplane with pretty travel agent Dale Arden (Melody Anderson). As the aircraft hits some mysterious turbulence, the two find true love. After Flash and Dale crash land in the heart of Dr. Zarkovs (Topol) space pad, the zany doctor forces them aboard his ship claiming that he has a date with destiny. Actually, Zarkov is hellbent on stopping the alien terrorist, Ming, from destroying the Earth. Flash, the cavalier that he is, also wants a piece of Ming when he discovers that the alien also wants Dale. Alas, Flash is sentenced to die. Ah, but Mings Mata Hari-lik- e MOVIE (FRI.) (MON.) Once revived by Aura, Flash sets out to form an alliance with Prince Barin (Tim Dalton) and Prince Vultan (Brian Blessed) to smash Ming and his cohorts. What ensues is a titantic, visually stimulating battle resplendent with outrageous special effects and settings helped along by the music of Britains premier rock group Queen, who sing the title track. The acting ranges from fair to excellent. Sam Jones is obviously a novice actor, but his role does not require a great deal of depth. Melody Anderson, a newcomer to the movie biz, does a nice job of portraying Dale Arden, a character who has a touch of Judy Benjamin (Private Benjamin') in her. Italian screen siren Ornella Muti makes a smashing American motion picture debut. She is not only beautiful, but extremely talented as well. Max Von Sydow is positively nefarious as Ming, while his archenemy, Topol, delivers a as hilarious performance Zarkov. Brian Blessed, the bearded Vultan, is a treat, with veteran British thesp Tim Dalton also doing a marvelous takeoff on Errol Flynn as Prince Barin. All in all, Flash Gordon is one of the few films where one can take the whole family and have a darn good time. You see, sci-f- i doesnt always have to deliver a 'message' in order to be successful. |
