Own a 4-Wh- eel t The Supermarket Shopper Sloane Martin When I recently entered a Kroger supermarket in an Indianapolis suburb, I noticed that electronic scanners had been installed at each check-ou- t counter. Surprisingly, the screens that display the price of each item purchased appeared to have been turned to face the cashier rather than the shopper. A few minutes later, with several items in my shopping cart, I got into the check-ou- t line to take a closer look at how the new equipment was arranged at the counter. As shoppers prepared to check out, they left their shopping carts at the front of the counter opposite the electronic scanner. Then they walked several feet forward to a chest-hig- h shelf; it was from there that they observed their purchases being tallied. (They could also use the shelf for writing checks, which is what Kroger says it is there for.) As I stood at that shelf, I realized that my first observation upon entering the store had been correct. The display screen was facing the cashier, not tl,e shopper. To see the prices on the display screen, I had to lean over the chest-higshelf, bending my head sharply to the left. In addition, the cashiers register-contro- l panel was mounted on a pedestal positioned directly between me and the items that were being passed across the scanner. With my purchases several feet away and blocked from view, it was almost impossible for me to see the individual price markings and to compare them with the numbers that flashed on the display screen. And that wasn't all. After items were scanned, the cashier shelf where they were pushed them behind the check-writin- g hidden from my view. I asked other shoppers if the location of the display screen made it difficult for them to see the prices of the items they were purchasing. They all confirmed that it did. In response to my inquiries, Kroger assured me that its policy is to face the display screen toward the shopper and that the situation I had encountered would be investigated. A few days later, I received a letter from Audrey McCaf-ferty- . Krogers manager of public information. She said I had probably experienced my problem because I had been standing where the bagger normally stands. No way! As a veteran supermarket shopper. I certainly know where the bagger is supposed to stand. Cmon, Kroger, give us a break! How can shoppers determine if their purchases are being recorded correctly if they must stand several feet from the scanner? If their vision is obscured by the register-contro- l h Drive TViick? panel? If the display screen is turned away from them? And shelf their purchases are then hidden behind a chest-higThis was the closest I have ever come to being pushed line wearing a blindfold. through a check-ou- t Shoppers must be considered in the design and installation of the electronic scanners that will be appearing in more and more supermarkets. The display screen should be pointed directly at the shopper. And it should be easy to read under all lighting conditions - even afternoon sunlight streaming through the big front windows of the store. The shopper should be able to get a clear view of each item as it is passed over the scanner. And the scanner should be close enough to the shopper that the price on each package can be easily read. The shopper should also be able to pick up an item after scanning to see that it has been correctly rung up. These are basic rights to which all shoppers in this electronic age are entitled.
