Show Richfields History Helps Shape Tone of County Fair Richfield was first settled in January 1864, then a melting pot of pioneers who had come west for freedom of religion, freedom to establish homes and schools making a community that would survive. And, survive it did, despite Indian uprisings at the coming of the white man, who like the Indian wanted to have a haven, a chance to hunt, fish and build a permanent place within this nation. Richfield is the seat of Sevier County and is at a 5,300 foot elevation with a population of nearly 6,000. It is built within a framework of mountains and valleys. Agriculture is the areas chief enterprise comprised of livestock, alfalfa, grain and supplemented by tourism, trade, manufacturing, mining and other allied industries. Both federal and state government offices are situated in the heart of downtown Richfield as well as the Sevier Valley Tech, a state vocational school. An Indian dormitory is also located in Richfield to lend educational help to those seeking to help not only themselves, but their counterparts in other states through learning. Richfield, originally was the hub for early day pioneers as they stretched out to begin settlements of their own. Many times, the Indians resenting the intrusion of the white man, ambushed or raided the early dugout settlements and the pioneers would have to retreat to Richfield on-si- te for protection. Monroe, Elsinore and other communities near Richfield sought protection in this main stronghold. Richfield was originally named Omni, for a Book of Mormon character, and for the fort that was built of rock carrying that name. A historic marker reminding the population of that fact is located at first north and second west streets: Richfield today is a growing community. Plans for a 37 acre industrial center are being implemented by Mayor Sue Marie City Young and the Richfield Council. A new shopping center is in use and creates interest for the local residents as well as for the outlying areas and visitors as well. The city boats an exceptional golf course, airport, many churches of all denominations, a modern thouse building, a new youth retention center, racquet club, many theatres, the home of the Tri- industry, County Music Guild, businesses of all types, restaurants, motels and entertainment centers as well as a police force, sheriffs department and Utah Highway Patrol.
