Show 12 '"""v The Salina Sun Thursday, A 4 May 12, 1983 Fishlake Boy Scout Camporee Rainsoaked and Shortened By Jerry Hansen On Friday evening, the 29th of April, one hundred boys and leaders representing the best of the Based on a system of scoring that included points for participation, uniforming, camping skills, and awards earned, Troop 636 of the American Legion earned the Pres Fishlake District pitched their tents on the field north of the Sevier Valley Tech in preparation for the activities of the Spring Camporee, The evenings activities included a uniform inspection of Scouts and Scoutmasters and a campfire ceremony with skits and songs. The Order of the Arrow, under the direction of Chapter Chief Dan Roberts conducted a Tap Out ceremony for the twenty odd boys who had previously been selected by their local troops to join the Order of the Arrow. Those scouts that were tapped out will now have to go to an Ordeal Encampment in the next twelve months to complete the entrance requirements. At taps, we discovered there are still several boys w'ho have not learned what being a scout is all about as they engaged in the childish behavior of dropping tents. Hopefully they will stay in the program long enough to grow out of such behavior. As a prelude to the days activities the clouds moved in and began to rain about 4a.m. At 5:45a.m., when thirty plus boys and three Scoutmasters assembled to start the five mile race everything was soggy. The race course was laid out on the west side of Richfield through the residential area. The scoring of the race was done on the average troop time multiplied by the percentage of the troop participating resulting in Troop 625 of Monroe being declared the winner by the narrowest of margins over second place Troop 636 of Salina (American Legion) and third place 626 of Monroe. Three Scoutmasters challenged the course and themselves and placed as follows: Brent Bowcutt 625, first; Jerry Hansen 636, second; and George Peterson 608, third. Shortly after the race the rains or monsoons began again and it was decided to reschedule the balance of the athletic events and softball tournament later in the summer. Congratulations to all the troops that braved the elements and helped make this shortened Camporee a success; your support and dedicat- ion is appreciated. Nate Anderson Scoutmaster and idential Ribbon as the top troop, followed by 625 and 626 of Monroe. 649, Louis Kjar Scoutmaster. Also representing North Sevier at the Camporee were Troops 656, The awards will be presented at the monthly Roundtable May 12.
