Its very interesting to hear some of the comments made during the presentation, says Elder, like the principal leaning over to the custodian and saying, youd better get those chains off the doors before he gets out to our school this afternoon, or I told you that area had to be cleaned up. Most generally, the comment that comes to our attenI just didnt tion is realize that was a problem. The biggest problem facing the school districts in bringing their schools up to code is a lade of funds to pay for improvements. The Fire Marshals Office has been taking this into consideration and prioritizing code violations, working on one or two at a time. The hope is that within a few years, the buildings will be brought into line. The school districts have responded enthusiastically to setting up the meetings, according to Elder. He said the districts realize the problems exist and are anxious to find ways to make our schools safer for both students and faculty alike. The seminars have only been held in approximately 25 percent of the school districts so far. Anyone wishing to attend a seminar scheduled for their area may contact their local school district office, or call the State Fire Marshals Office in Salt Lake City at Nearly a 100 performers representing every county in Utah competed at the states largest talent show at the Utah State Fair.
