' ' ... Salina City Officials Should Prosecute Landfill Offenders V' I May Not Be Objective, But I Mean Every Word . Editorial the city is asking too much for citizens who are not yet converted to obeying the ordinances regarding the new Sanitary Landfill to start obeying them now. Several persons have been seen taking household garbage to the wrong section of the landfill. This was after this newspaper had published the story about persons inadvertantly dumping household garbage in the upper fill reserved for tree limbs, construction waste and other uncoverable debris. These persons who took their garbage to the wrong fill after that were blatantly We do not believe breaking the laws. One such offender was told by one of the men directing traffic to the landfill that he would have to dump his household garbage in the general landfill and his debris in the upper landfill. The man with the household garbage and debris then took all of his garbage to the upper landfill, dumped all of his load at the upper landfill and drove back toward Salina, waving to the traffic director as he drove by. Such arrogant violation of the law is appalling to us. Fortunately it is equally appalling to the city officials who have instructed both traffic directors to take down the license plate numbers of any violators of the new landfill ordinances. We support the city in this and encourage those in charge to prosecute violators to the full extent of the law. Good Job, Scouts! ; By John C. Speer Salina Sun Editor Mason came down with a vehicle he I waited a week to write this column on the North Sevier Jeep Posse so that it would not be filled with emotional and overly-biase- d gushings. Unfortunately, for objective journalism, I still feel the same way I did last week when I worked with and watched the posse in action after the tragic airplane accident which killed two Utah County men and injured two others near Acord borrowed from a Huntington man who was at the scene. This is where I began to get a taste of what the jeep posse is all about. Being born and bred in the suburbs of Ohio, the roughest terrain I have ever ridden over was the dirt road from hole 7 to hole 8 at Oaklund Country Club in my grandfathers golf cart. Let me tell you, if you ever want to relieve a bad case of constipation, try riding the terrain on these mountains. Lakes. Thanks to a phone call from Sheila Rasmussen, I found out about the crash at about 10 p.m. Since I am still a relative newcomer to the area, I called up Jay McKinlay and asked him if he would come along and keep me from getting lost. Being the great friend that he is, Jay jumped out of the shower, threw on his best plane wreck searching clothes, and he and I headed up to Acord Lakes in my Japanese import. (Sorry, Larry!) The old Honeybee made it up the mountain about as far as Billy Weavers sheriffs car made it. We parked behind him and waited for a North Sevier Jeep Posse member to come and get us. About half an hour later, Allen at The Salina Sun are impressed with the great work the newly chartered Boy Scout Troop 636 has been doing lately. This fine scout troop is sponsored by the Salina American Legion and was organized in part to provide the scouting experience for boys not affiliated with the LDS Church or whose ward does not have an adequate scouting program. On the way up, I met our business manager, Stev Cowley of Richfield, and members of the Richfield Jeep Posse. Steve told me that North Sevier Jeep Posse members had been there before them and that they had done an admirable job taking care of the two injured men waiting for the helicopter to take them to Sevier Valley Hospital. When we finally arrived at the scene, I could hardly believe my eyes or control my emotions. I think I put up an admirable front. At least I thought I did until someone said, Look at John. You can tell hes never seen this before. Someone later said it was a shame that no one was officially appointed to be in charge of the search and rescue. Boy, you could have fooled me. With one exception (yours truly), every person there was calm, collected, and professional in every aspect of the work to be done. This past Saturday, at invitation of the Federal Aviation Administration which investigated the accident, eleven North Sevier Jeep Posse members went back to the site and removed every piece of When it came time to place the bodies in the body bags for transport down the mountain, only one person fainted at the thought. I handed my camera to someone and grabbed a piece of one of the bags. It was so heavy and the walking so awkward that I had to grab onto Larry Shaheens shoulder in front of me. I walked I am sure the same could be said for other search and rescue teams, but they are outside of my realm of experience. Larry and the others could not have been more understanding. He kept reassuring me that it was all right to hold on, and when he thought I might be getting tired (he was right on!), he called to the others to stop. Later, when my hand was struck by a piece of wood, Larry continually checked with me to In my capacity as editor of The I will probably have the Sun, responsibility to cover another unfortunate incident such as this Acord Lakes crash.
