Show Gypsum Plants (Continued from Page 1) moving to Atlanta, Ga. to stay abreast of financial markets, says Jorgenson. is , Of course, other things need to be worried about, says Beeman. Three of the most important are safety, then quality, then cost. That has been U.S. Gypsums philosophy for 57 years and it has kept them alive to the present, he said. Because the two Sevier County plants hire almost 200 employees between them, employees are an important aspect of the operation. Employees come from all over Sevier County. Beeman says his company has, however, lost 18 to 19 people to retirement over the last two years. We have people coming in here every day looking for work, he adds. In both board plants gypsum, after hardening between two sheets of paper, is cut in varying lengths such as eight or 16 feet, is usually one-haor inches thick, says Eric Kasiskie, production supervisor, U.S. Gypsum. Kasiske says the wallboard is usually warehoused and then sold through a distributor. five-eight- lf Well, Despite Recession ' To keep the processing plants busy, both companies have large stockpiles of rocks there at all times. U.S. Gypsums quarry site, about seven miles northeast of the main plant covers 200 acres. Georgia Pacifics quarry site is another two miles northeast of that. Where Georgia Pacific is now located, and before either company was there, the area was involved in some type of building industry since the turn of the century. An old mill next to Georgia Pacific along with their plant quarries was operated by American Keene Cement Company back about 1898. Everything was done by hand, says Jorgenson. Today, the old plant is used by Georgia Pacific for producing a strip composition material for making fire resistant doors. Western Gypsum Company began operating after buying some properties from American Keene. Western Gypsum was then taken over by Certainteed Products which later created Bestwall Gypsum Co. and operated until 1965, when it was Pacific. by Georgia acquired Jorgenson says gypsum has helped provide the standard of living this nation enjoys today. ilWWfidffcirrC..: nmmmm K Vs 4 i,.' v , t It probably seems like just yesterday for many old timers, when hauling gyp- sum from quarries above Sigurd was done by horse and wagon. Youve also suggested ice to make the gum ball up so that it can be scraped off; cleaning solution; and peanut butter or cooking oil especially for hair. Ive found that egg white will sometimes soften gum so that it will come out when the garment is laundered, but weve had the best success with turpentine. Its (Take care, though. Dear Vi: I dislike the odor of moth balls, so, before storing my woolens, I either wash or dryclean them if needed or hang them in the sun for awhile, first with the right side then the wrong side out. Finally, I pack them in tightly closed plastic bags to which Ive added cedar chips from a lumber yard. Thats an odor I dont mind wearing.
