Speer Salina Sun Editor - freedom i Salma Citizens Deserve More Police Protection The Salina City Council should consider for its 1963 budget, the approval of hiring at least one more officer for the city police department. years budget is already set, and funds allocated in a tight budget, it isnt too early to consider next year, especially in the face of what is happening in our area. While this that the city should begin now, to look toward next years budget and to make whatever preparations are necessary to ensure that our city gets the added protection it needs. Police Chief Gordon Kiesels recent report before the city council was a wise move to get the council thinking about the situation so that the idea gets the attention it deserves. Salina City is in a unique position. It is a crossroads town for three highways: US 89, US 50 and Interstate 70. The transient traffic brings some good and considerate people through our area. It also, unfortunately, brings some uhdesirables. These people must be dealt with when they break local, state or federal laws. Our own people must be protected from the ones who are inclined We believe, toward violence, In a report published by the Uniform crime Reporting Section of the Bureau of Criminal Identification, Salina police were reported to have dealt with 209 part one crimes in 1981. Part one crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larceny, motor vehicle thefts and arson. With a police force of four men, Salina police handled an average of 52 part one crimes per officer. According to the report, Sevier County Sheriffs deputies handled about 17 part one crimes per officer. Richfield handled about 33 cases per officer with a police force of nine fulltime officers. The Sheriffs office employs 13 full time officers. We realize as much as anyone else that these are difficult economic times. That is why we believe the city should begin now to look ahead to next year, keep accurate records of transient crime, conduct surveys with their officers and gather other helpful information. The question is not should Salina citizens get the kind of police protection they need, but will the city set the proper priorities so that they will? h Orderly Agreement Proves Problems Can Be Solved Never underestimate the power of an angry public. The Sevier School District Board of Education, in reversing an earlier decision to try an experiment in the north Sevier attendance area with earlier school starting times, found itself faced with a bunch of angry parents who didnt want the change . especially as an experiment on their kids.. And so, after meeting with the board, parents' presented a petition with 400 signatures, pointing out their displeasure with the idea and the board bowed to the request. ...... I have given the state Democratic Party leaden a whole week off without saying a word. Utah State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Millers official response which I allowed be printed in last weeks Letters to the Editor, however, screams for a response in this space. What poppycock. In the entire platform approved by Utah Demo-crathere is not one statement to that effect. Not one. If the Democrats believed that, why is it not in their platform? Or is Mr. Miller speaking for himself? Point three made by Miller: The statement made by implication that we had a plank is also an absolute untruth. What Miller infers is his business. What the North Sevier delegates were upset about was the fact that supporters of one of the national candidates made obvious in their nominating North Sevier members of the Democratic Party are intelligent, thinking people, which is precisely why they are in hot water with their state leaden. Millers personal attack on Evelyn Shields was uncalled for and out of order. She has said nothing that her fellow state delegates have not verified. under certain circumstances to absolute freedom of choice. I know of few Republicans, let alone Democrats, who believe in absolute prohibition of abortion in all circumstances. Point One: He says state Democrats voted against a plank on the Equal Rights Amendment. There is no such plank in our platform and to imply that there is is an absolute falsehood. That is very interesting because right in the platform it reads: We support the principal that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by Fd any state on account of sex like to see anything come closer to the exact wording of Section One of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment than that. Point five by Miller really shows a lack of maturity that is almost embarrassing. To attack a fellow party member by name and put her up for ridicule is shameful. Why not attack me if he believed the quote to be incorrect. I have known Evelyn Shields for several months now. I also know her by reputation. Most people, including Evelyn, will readily admit that she wears her emotions right up front. But I know of few people who possess her honesty or who have her vulnerability. Point Two: He says that he has reviewed all of the candidates speeches and found nothing about the Equal Rights Amendment in them. He said they all supported the fundamental view of equal rights for all but that no candidate said or implied he or she supported the Equal Rights Amendment as the solution. What does Miller take us for? b he saying that in just two years time, Frances Farley, Ted re-- ; Wilson, and others have of their active support of pented the ERA, seen the light and now think like conservatives on the subject? This item will be discussed more when we get to point five. i Continuing with his point two, Miller says, I would state that we . . . . support the idea of changing laws at the state, city, or county level which may tend to discrimi Mayor Wilson has apparently modified that stand, which is his right. Perhaps someone should modify the platform so that it says what Mr. Miller thinks it says. Until then, I sincerely hope Mr. Miller extends to Mrs. Shields an apology. Since the chairman's letter was an official response which contained no dearly libelous statements, the two newspapers to which Mr. Miller sent the letters had little choice but to run them in full. The letter was read in its entirety to the entire central committee of the Sevier County Democratic Party a full week before it appeared in either newspaper. Mrs. Shields said not one person from that meeting called her to tell her of the letter or its contents, or to warn her that the letter would be appearing in two newspapers. One person told me about it. I told her we would have a response to the letter the same week. I subsequently changed my mind because I believed Miller had a right to at least one week without my immediate rebuttal. E.RA. and what Mayor Wilsons stand was on the Equal Rights Amendment at the time of Julys Democratic Convention. straightf- , tness? Miller says that the statement attributed to Evelyn Shields concerning Ted Wilsons remark that he supported the E.RA. was an absolute bearing of false witness if the quote is correct. I have a hard time with that statement. Is he saying that if the quote is correct, then Wilson is lying, or that the people who told me about the quote are lying? Or is he saying Fm lying? For Mr. Millers benefit, let me rehearse a conversation I had with Carol Sue Prows, a state delegate from Salt Lake County. She told me Both Virginia Dickert and Marion Peterson, the two other state delegates from North Sevier who attended the convention, have verified what Mis. Shields told me about the convention. Concerning some, of Mr. Millers comments against the three, both Mrs. Dickert and Mrs. Peterson said to me, I independently of each other, must have attended a different convention than the one he attended. There have been mistakes made of this unfortunate affair. The one mistake I will not make is to allow Mr. Millers erroneous statements and uncalled for attacks to go unanswered. His partys platform endorses the ERA. His partys candidate for Orrin Hatchs senate seat was in favor of the ERA at the time of the July convention. Eerything Evelyn Shields told me concerning both subjects has' been verified by eye-witnesses and by the platform itself. on all sides I am amazed that Mr. Miller, cannot see what is in his own partys written statements and appalled that he would seek to publically discredit one of his own party members who was simply seeking to understand with two d other state delegates just what and whom they ar being asked to support an campaign for. 7.. to- - 5.
