Show Candidates Get Set for Debate Conference Readied .? A public information program featuring Third Congressional District Republican candidates Howard C. Nielson and Raymond Beckham, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sevier County Courthouse auditorium (basement). The program is sponsored by the Sevier County Republican Pfirty and is open to the public at no admission cost. The evening will be in the form of a question and answer session, with the audience to write questions which will be screened by a panel and then presented to the candidates. Each candidate will alternately receive a question first, with the other candidate to answer second. Then each candidate will ask his opponent one question on the same topic. Party officials said the program is designed to give voters a better insight of the candidates, meet them personally and hear their views on various issues. The first session of the Salina IDS Stake Conference will commence this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. with a meeting for all adults in the stake. semi-annu- A similar program is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 29 prior to the general election with all major Presiding at this weekends conference will be Conrad V. SALINA, UTAH, THURSDAY, AUGST 19, 1982 VOLUME 60, NUMBER 33 School Board Nixe Early Time Change By Loren Webb Sevier School District has reversed its position on implementing earlier starting times on a one year trial basis for schools in the North Sevier area. Board president George Buck Young expressed concern that dissention might continue with the opening of school should the new policy go into effect. Glover said however, if the board decided to go with an earlier starting time, that the people would eventually go along with it. But he said we dont have a lot of support for this in the rest of the county. The decision came Aug. 12 after the board met with principals from North Sevier High School, North Sevier Middle School and Salina Elementary. The board voted to keep the starting times for schools throughout the district, the same as the previous year. Parsons also said the district Some parents from the towns affected had earlier taken their own survey and presented the results to the board. They also included a petition against the proposal, signed by 400 people. Salina Police Chief Gordon Kiesel displays some of the property stolen in a rash of burglaries and thefts that plagued the city this month. Two juveniles and one adult have been arrested and face charges. One of the juveniles has been charged with burglary of the high school on July 19 and burglary and theft at the high school on Aug. 1 ; with burglary in connection with a break-i- n Lions Club Members Make Plans for Park If you plan to drive up around the' new tity park on W ednesday evenings, : dont be surprised if you see Lions Club members milling around. The Salina Lions Club has dedded to make the new park its pet project every Wednesday evening. Club members will help pour a 20 x 20 slab of cement and put together four aluminum tables which the public will be free to use. The tables also will be used by the Lions Club for its summer meetings. City Councilman Jack Learning told of the clubs plans at Monday evenings tity council meeting. He said the dub plans to provide 12 fire all pits and 14 trash barrels, painted. at the American Legion Hall also on Aug. 1. The youth also was charged with burglary and theft in an Aug. 2 break-i- n at the Wasatch Cafe, an Aug. 2 burglary and theft at the Salina Radio Shade, an Aug. 2 burglary and theft at the American Legion Hall, and the Aug. 2 burglary and theft of two bicydes. He also was arrested for being in possession of alcohol. The other juvenile was charged with five counts of burglary, four counts of theft, and possession of alcohol in connection with the same break-in- s and thefts. Robert Wayne Johnson, 18, Salina, was charged with four counts of burglary and three counts of theft of property in the same cases. Johnson was incarcerated in the Sevier County Jail and faced arraignment before Judge Thad Wasden this week. Bail was set at $5,000. The three schools in North Seviei have announced their orientation and registration schedules for this coming school year. Tim Smith, North Sevier High School principal, said he was not the perpetrator of the earlier starting times proposal. He refused to refute every argument parents had presented. He said he made the earlier starting time recommendation moderating the discussion,. Board members Ivan Cowley and Max Hartle were not present, but left written recommendations with Mr. Young, saying they were opposed to the early starting times. Young said a better selling job probably ought to be done in the future on this topic. The proposed times would have had the high stiiool starting at 8 a.m., the middle school starting at 8:05 a.m. and the elementary starting at 8:25 a.m. Area Schools Tell When to Register At the meeting, Supt. Richard Bell asked the principals to present their case again and refute anything the other side had said if they felt inclined, before the board made a decision. Smith said he still felt good about the idea for the high school, but added he did not want to be pitted against the community. He did say drill team members and some student congress members were in favor of the earlier times. I think we ought to give it a try. North Sevier Middle School principal LaMont J. Dansie said the school is there to educate the children and would do what the people want. He said which ever way the board voted, would be fine with him as there were more pressing things to deal with. Salina Elementary principal Mike Robinson added the schools did not misrepresent their survey findings. He said it was actually a standoff as far as those against and for the proposal. Board member Ken Glover also said the survey was very suspect. Dansie admitted theyd made a mistake by having the PTA administer a survey, but it wasnt the PTAs fault either. ic Seniors and juniors will register at the new school on Monday; seniors from 9 a.m. - noon, juniors from 1 - 4 p.m. Sophomores and freshmen will register on Tuesday, following the same time schedule. Registration and locker fees totalling $15 can be paid at these times. The new high school will be dedicated Thursday (tonight) at 8 p.m. with a dedicatory prayer offered by IDS Stake President Amo Bastian. Governor Scott M. Matheson will deliver the keynote address. One of the documents that will be a part of the new high stiiool is a high school constitution drawn up by the NSHS Student Congress this summer. The enrollment breakdown for classes is first, 96; second, 94; third, 69 ; fourth, 86, and fifth, 78. 5; All elementary buses (Aurora and at the Redmond) will begin pick-u- p first bus stop near 8:35 a.m. and then use the same bus stops and same routes as last year. School will begin at 9 a.m. The lunch schedule will be as follows: K and first, 11:30 a.m.; second through fifth will begin eating every five minutes after that. First and second graders will begin classes again at 12:20; third and fourth at 12:30, and fifth and afternoon kindergarten at 12:40. Tonya Larsen and Roene Anderson to the stiiool teatiling staff. Mrs. Anderson will teach special education all day. are new additions The only two mixing of groups will be second and third graders and fourth and fifth graders. School for this coming year is 548. At the end of last year, it was 565. The stiiool promoted 74 fifth and sixth Orientation for North Sevier Middle School students will be Monday, Aug. 23, for sixth graders, Aug. 24 for seventh graders, and Aug. 25 for those entering the eighth grade. Parents can register their kids any time between 8:30 a.m. and noon or between 1 - 4 p.m. graders to the middle stiiool located in the old high stiiool building.
