Show Wednesday May 19, 1982 Swiifc CeM Anas azi Ihdian Village Offers Look at Ancients masonry, walls were usually made of sandstone, either shaped or unshaped, and stuck together with a mud mortar. To fill in spaces, smaller chinking stones were wedged into the mortar between the larger stones. The foundation of most masonry walls were of unshaped basalt held together with mud mortar. (Continued from Page 1) Davis expects an increase of from 300 to 400 percent with the final paving of Road. the Boulder-Grove- r More than 65 percent of visitors to Anasazi are professionals or technical professionals by occupation. Many find that the site offers an interesting and exciting sidelight to their trip into the Boulder Mountain area. Some find that where plans did not originally include Anasazi, their trip to nearby attractions led them unsuspectingly to one of the most interesting and unusual parts of their itinerary in stopping at Anasazi Indian Village and gave them a far better insight into the story of the area in which they were vacationing. to Excavation of the rooms at the site given archeologists strong evidence that there was a fire that destroyed much of the village at about the time of abandonment. Of 83 structures excavated by University of Utah, the roofs of 67 burned. At the time of the fire it is through that 67 percnet of the dwellings that were burned, were occupied. Along the trail is an original barrow pit dug by the Anasazi. Archaeologists speculate that it was dug in order to obtain caliche (a hard, natural layer of soil that underlies the site) that was used in mortar for wall construction, and plaster for walls and floors. visitors. has . The pit was then used as a trash depository where animal bones, pieces of pottery .and burnt wood were thrown. As is characteristic of other Anasazi sites, three burials were found in the soft fill of the trash midden when it was excavated in 1958. Probably the most interesting parts of the village are the excavated areas where the visitor can see for himself how the ancient inhabitants lived. self-guide- d There are seven pithouses excavated at the site. A roof was added in 1978 to one for protection and to demonstrate the type of roof which would have originally been on the structure. In the pithouse are found a firepit, a ventilator shaft, a rectangular slab-line- d pit to the north, the use of which is unknown, at least six holes for roof In Kayenta ' , From the last point on the trail, visitors can see the areas the Anasazi used for farming and the mountains where they hunted. A creek about 300 yards away would have supplied ample water for the culinary and irrigation needs of the community. self-guid- Viewing what remains of an ancient people today, it must be remembered that they loved their children, faced their problems, had good and bad times just as people do today and that their lifestyle varied from some of the present peoples of the southwest more in degree than in kind, according to archeologists. - 4 ' w' Part of walls of dwelling rooms that have been stabilized after excava- Stabilization, archaeologists said, was replacing of crumbled , (and often missing) mortar used by ancient Anasazis with similar mor-tio- tar, The cause of the fire can only be speculated. Theories include: (1) The village burned accidentally. Because of the use of wood only in the roofs and some walls and also the distance between the structures, it is hard to imagine that the two room blocks and the pithouses would have burned from a single accidental fire. (2) The village burned during an attack from enemies. Excavation of the site shows no evidence of violence or attempts to defend the village. (3) The village was set on fire by the inhabitants at the time of abandonment. This theory is supported by the observation of modern groups of Indians who burn a structure or village upon pemanent abandonment. d Two types of masonry can be seen along the trail: Kayenta type masonry favor sites with a nearby year-roun- d water supply, nearby fields in which to grow crops, nearby areas where wild game, wood and stone could be obtained, and high places with a good view of the surrounding area. In the village there is evidence of only one small structure being built after the fire. Several habitation rooms occur along the trail. Some of the rooms, the larger ones, were not only lived in but also used for the preparation of and storage of food. Slab-linestructures at the ends of some of the rooms were either storage or mealing bins, some even with metate and manos which were used to grind corn. During excavation, bundles of unused willow stems intended for use in basketmaking were discovered. tour clearly marked with trail guide leads the visitor easily around the site, explaining each archeological antiquity. '1'he trail begins with the burial site of the teenage female skeleton on display in the museum. Artifacts excavated with the skeleton included 13 whole pots, 143 pieces of pottery, 16 arrowheads of flake, one bone awl, 74 turquoise beads, more than 1000 stone and shell beads from a bracelet and many seeds which archeologists believe to be squash. Because of the many artifacts found with the skeleton, local residents have dubbed it the Indian Princess. and Jacal masonry. the Anasazi dug a rounded square hole in the caliche 13 feet in diameter and ranging from 2a to 4 feet deep. Both the walls and the floor of the pithouse were covered with a thin coating of caliche-adob-e plaster. A ventilator shaft goes from the south wall of the structure to an opening on the outside. l) Nearby is Deer Creek camping area and on Boulder Mountain, Oak Creek, Pleasant Creek and Singletree campgrounds. A To build the structure, Jacall (pronounced masonry had posts placed upright around the floor of a room and the space between them filled with either sticks or small stones or a combination of both. It was held together with mud mortar covering the entire wall. The museum offers special programs and filmstrips for groups. Outside the museum five picnic areas provide an additional service supports, four depressions where the bottom of a ladder once stood, four holes to the east of the firepit that may have been where a weaving loom was anchored to the floor, and several other holes of unknown function. The Coombs site has many characteristics that are typical of Anasazi villages.
