Show Mini VOLUME 60, NUMBER 20 SALINA, UTAH, THURSDAY, MAY 20, PRICE 1982 25c Nearly Maised to Move Access Road I . The dilemma surrounding at the special the proposed new sanitary landfill for Salina appears to have been solved -as far as the access road is concerned. The Salina City Council voted unanimously to move the road farther away from the Eastside Cemetery if Virginia Dickert, Salina, can raise the $6,390 needed to pay Housing and Urban Development (HUD) bade for the money used to begin building the road. The council gave Mrs. Dickert, who is the leader of a group opposing the doseness of the road to the cemetery, until June 3 to present the council with the money. Mrs. Dickert had raised more than $4,000 by Tuesday morning and had received another $1,000 in pledges. She said she expects to have the total amount by thd end of next week. Another problem connected with the moving of the road involves the hill around which the road will be taken. The hill apparently was sold for $1 in 1958 to the State Road Commission. The state has offered to sell the hill bade to the dty for $1. The council made the acquiring of the hill another stipulation in their motion to approve moving the road. Not all the councilmen were completely satisfied with their ded-sioLynn Reynolds and Redge Hansen both had doubts last Thursday n. Councilman Reynolds said he believed the consensus of the people he talked with was that the road should be kept where it is. Councilman Hansen said several times during the meeting that he thought the council should be legally protected in case Mrs. Dickert did not come up with the needed funds, and the city was stuck with a $6,200 bill. Another dilemma faced by the council concerning the road is a $1,548 bill for telephone cables that had to be moved from the area when the cables were damaged during construction of the access road. l The council voted Monday to give the bill for the moving of the cables to the telephone company, since, they agreed, the company was at fault for not notifying the dty early enough that it was placing the cables where the access road was to go. It was mentioned at the Thursday meeting that 300 feet of the road would need to be moved. 16 Seniors to Get Seminary Diplomas Some high school students in the area will be going to two graduations this week. A copy of the petition is available for signing at The Salina Sun, 73 E. Main; the Salina City offices and the North Sevier High School. Called the Right to Know petition, its purpose is to require legislators to open the doors of their caucuses to the press and the public to allow them to see just what is happening in those sessions. David Pruden, manager of the Utah Press Assn., a proponent of the measure, said that on several occasions the legislature has rejected attempts to change this law which would bring them in line with school boards, city councils and county commissioners in requiring that meetings be open to the public. Much of the discussion or debate on important legislation takes place behind closed doors, Pruden said. We pay the bills and have a right to know what takes place in those closed door caucuses. Persons are invited to sign the petition at The Sun offices, Salina City offices and North Sevier High School. The graduating class will sing its theme song, Through the Years.
